John, Lynn and I took advantage of the warm Nov weather and went camping down South. It was a great way to get in one last bit of camping before I'm chained to a desk starting next Monday. John got to test out his new-to-him transmission on this trip and it performed flawlessly.

We entered the trail system slightly north of T or C and came out north of Silver City, six days later. John's album has links to the Google map in case you're curious where went went.

Rifle hunting season started so we saw lots of hunters as we entered the Gila through the ghost town of Chloride. I guess deer were scarce according to some of the hunters. Monticello box canyon was awesome with the water being not too deep. Luna park campground was our first night camping spot and it was totally awesome. This FS campground is at a great location with three spots and with total privacy. Most of our remaining camping spots were in washes where camp fires were safe to burn and we had privacy. We slept in our vehicles so having a smooth, level ground wasn't paramount. The nights were pretty cold and the days were warm enough for shorts, typically.

Fuel - I think having 40 gallons of total fuel should allow for comfortable exploring of this area. John had a single jerry can on top of his 25 gallons and that made for some unsettling times. He has ordered three jerry cans for future trips :D Lynn and I have aux tanks for extra fuel capacity. I think I consumed about 75 gallons of fuel that allowed me to cover 700 total miles. John calculated that we traveled about 240 miles of dirt road on this trip.

The Gila needs to be explored some more as it is rather vast and most of it is very stocker friendly I thought. However, a decent set of A/T tires is a must due to the sharp rocks on some of the trails. If you plan on entering the Gila through the ghost town of Chloride, you'll need a higher clearance vehicle as the first 10 miles of the trail is through a rough wash.

yep. great weather, great trails, great company, great time...

X2, perfect trip, perfect timing weather-wise. And all those places we saw yet to explore. Rarely have I seen anything as pretty in New Mexico as Monticello Box in all it's Fall color. Amazing.

Always wanted to explore the Gila. Never got farther in than Cholride. Maybe we can do a club long weeknd in the spring.

I talked to Jan Älsen via ExpeditionUtah this morning. Apparently he and several others, possibly including beno, will do some of this same area in a few days. Hope the weather stays cooperative. Have a great trip guys.

I'm planning on joining them only for a weekend portion of the bigger trip they are doing. If it is this weekend, I will not be joining them. If it is next weekend, I'm in.

I have also wanted to explore the Gila but never got around to it. Heading to Silver City for a getaway in a few weeks - I was thinking of US 60 to Magdalena, south on 52, then to 59 to 61 and out the way you guys came out.

How was the cutoff from 59 to 61?

Don't know, we didn't take it! We took 59 to FS696 and then headed south and picked up hwy 35 before arriving at Silver City.

Looks like it is on for next weekend. I plan on meeting up with Jan and Kirk on Saturday AM wherever they might be.....if anyone else is interested, let me know.

I guess it depends on which map you look at. On John's, on day 5, you leave 59 heading sw and turn onto 61 heading south. "Camp 5" is on 61. I guess the cutoff was FS 696...

You're correct. We took 696 that dumped us on to 61 north of Wall Lake. At the point where we picked up 61, it's called Star road on Delorme. The road is typical, full of washboards. FS hired a contractor to fix all the drainage that go under the road.
