SILVER Star
John, Lynn and I took advantage of the warm Nov weather and went camping down South. It was a great way to get in one last bit of camping before I'm chained to a desk starting next Monday. John got to test out his new-to-him transmission on this trip and it performed flawlessly.
We entered the trail system slightly north of T or C and came out north of Silver City, six days later. John's album has links to the Google map in case you're curious where went went.
Rifle hunting season started so we saw lots of hunters as we entered the Gila through the ghost town of Chloride. I guess deer were scarce according to some of the hunters. Monticello box canyon was awesome with the water being not too deep. Luna park campground was our first night camping spot and it was totally awesome. This FS campground is at a great location with three spots and with total privacy. Most of our remaining camping spots were in washes where camp fires were safe to burn and we had privacy. We slept in our vehicles so having a smooth, level ground wasn't paramount. The nights were pretty cold and the days were warm enough for shorts, typically.
Fuel - I think having 40 gallons of total fuel should allow for comfortable exploring of this area. John had a single jerry can on top of his 25 gallons and that made for some unsettling times. He has ordered three jerry cans for future trips
Lynn and I have aux tanks for extra fuel capacity. I think I consumed about 75 gallons of fuel that allowed me to cover 700 total miles. John calculated that we traveled about 240 miles of dirt road on this trip.
The Gila needs to be explored some more as it is rather vast and most of it is very stocker friendly I thought. However, a decent set of A/T tires is a must due to the sharp rocks on some of the trails. If you plan on entering the Gila through the ghost town of Chloride, you'll need a higher clearance vehicle as the first 10 miles of the trail is through a rough wash.
