Hey guys,

Any local shops out here you'd recommend for an engine rebuild? I have a '93 FZJ80. Would at minimum need to replace some gaskets (upper oil pan) and seals (rear main), but would consider a full engine refresh if I can afford it.

What are typical rebuild costs for our engines?

I would plan 15k at least if paying someone

Contact @Fj80oregon about a rebuild!

Maybe a breakdown would be helpful. Nearly half of that price tag is labor to remove and reinstall.

All things considered the price @Fj80oregon charges for a quality rebuild seems reasonable to me. He is a member here, a known quantity, has a history of high quality rebuilds, uses factory parts, and has happy customers.

If you can do the R&R yourself, you can slash the total cost by a ton.

A nearby 80 owner just went through a failed engine over the winter, went the @Fj80oregon rebuild route, and is happy with the outcome. Before he pulled the trigger, we talked a lot about alternatives. Unless you are rebuilding the engine yourself, all options come in pretty close to each other.

Assuming you like your 80 and it is in otherwise good condition, there aren't many great like-for-like options to replace it for ~$20k (I assume the comparison is you could get at most ~$5k for a damaged roller, and would avoid spending ~$8k on a rebuild, and ~7k on the install).

With any luck you'll get another 3-500k joyful miles out of a properly rebuilt engine.

On the other hand, if you don't love your 80 and it isn't in otherwise good condition, you could easily get into a decent 100 series, or maybe an early 200 series for that money.
