Has anyone had any experience, good or not so good, running Treadwright tires? My main focus is on-road performance and tread wear in all weather conditions including snow with a small amount of light off-roading. I am considering their Sentinel B2B A/T or Warden A/T. Each tire is $113.00 plus $127.00 for shipping for a total of $528.00 for four tires to my door.

I'm leaning more towards the Sentinel because of the new rubber on the sidewalls as well as just the tread area like a typical retread.

Plenty of reviews out there. Consensus is to stay away as people have had more than a few catastrophic failures.

I have only heard of one serious failure and there was a lot going on in that case, overinflation, overloading, etc., that makes me wonder if any tire would have been just as likely to fall.
 
I drive a borrowed Isuzu Trooper with some 31/10.50/15 mud tires and they generate some noise. Other than that I don't see any practical problems with them. On a light weight vehicle they'll prob be ok.
Do a search throughout Mud and you should find at least 20 threads discussing recapped tires, specifically this 're'manufacturer.
The trooper's tires have uneven wear, but that is most likely due to bad balljoints and off alignment.
 
I had a thread in the 60 forum about these and there were more than a few guys that chimed in about them having issues. After doing my own research I found a few threads on different forums that had some catastrophic failures, one being on here where the guy was doing 70mph in his 80series and the tire blew rolling the truck several times. No overloading, over inflation, etc.

For what it is worth, I have heard good things about the company trying to make things right but this is your main connection to the road so I would really hesitate to go "cheap" on tires. But, caveat emptor.
 
I ordered a set of Treadwright Guard Dogs for my Xterra a few days ago, I will take some pictures and give my initial impressions when they get here.

I did quite a bit of research myself, I found the majority to have a positive experience with Treadwrights. I did find a few reports of failure, but it is definitely not a common occurrence with these tires.

Set of 4 265/75/R16's shipped to my door for under $600. Other tires I was considering were $1000-1200 for a set. The savings paid for a timing belt, water pump, belts, hoses, seat covers and a few other odds and ends.
 
I've had multiple sets on multiple trucks over the past 10 years (Tread-Wright was formerly called Hi-Tech Retread) including Suzuki Samurai, Isuzu Trooper, and Land Cruiser FJ60. All were MTs, so I have no experience with the ATs. High praise and no complaints. The one problem I had with a low-miles sidewall was replaced at no cost but shipping. I like T-W.
 
I recall that story above and I don't recall them being retread tires when he rolled. If someone could pull up the thread and prove me wrong please do but I recall them being standard, new tires. That was also a pretty rough enviroment, hot pavement and was heavily loaded. I could be remembering wrong though and that was a very bad wreck and I'm glad they all made it out ok.

I have owned a few pairs of these tires. Only one issue and it was resolved immediatly. They sent me a replacement tire rush order and gave me an extra one for my spare for my troubles. No shipping costs. Great customer service. No wear issues with them and performed well in the off-road variety as well as my AT.


They also have a new MFG process they just started that is suppossed to make them even more reliable. I would highly recomend them.

I just installed my 2nd set on my FZJ80 and am a big fan. I run them as winter tires with the Kedge grip and they are unstoppable in snowy/icy weather. Stopping, starting, turning, etc...like driving in summer on a packed gravel road. My only complaint? If you are an impatient driver, these will only make that worse since you can drive circles around everyone else out there :)

This set is 315 Guard Dogs on 17" FJC steelies. The previous set was 285 Guard Dogs on stock 80 wheels...sold the tires to Hank and he ran them on his 80 for a while then on another truck that he sold.

The tread blocks are all the same size, so they are not quiet. I wheeled the 285's and the tread blocks didn't chunk any worse than other tires I've run. Heather is already begging for a set for her GX470, but she'll have to make due with the Blizzak's for now :)
 
After doing as much research as I can stand I'm going to order the Sentinels in 265/75R16. If it matters Treadwright is now retreading not only the tread area, but the entire sidewall. I'll post pics and my opinions when I finally get them. And will also be balancing with Dyna beads. I have had great success with these in the past.
 
More advice needed... I can request what tire brand (Goodyear, BFG, Michelin, ETC) the tires have as a casing and was wondering if one brand over the other is designed better. Stronger sidewalls are the main thing that comes to mind.
 
I will see if I can find the review. Klinetime in the 60s forum has a buddy that was running them and had 3 different blow outs. I think the original problem may have been that the sidewalls were giving way since they were not putting new rubber there but do see like MSGGrunt said that they are now doing that.

Well, there are good and bad reviews for every tire manufacturer on the globe that makes round tires. Hell, even some good and bad reviews for less than round ones too :)

It's a non-well known fact that almost 70% of semi trucks on the highway run a recapped tire - on every axle except the steers - due to the turning pressure on the sidewalls and DOT regulations. I've run over 1.5million miles on recap tires - and have only had 2 blow-outs! It all boils down to tire care and maintenance...and PRESSURE! You cannot over or under-inflate any tire without serious risks of failure.

Okay, off my soabox....I'm on my 2nd set of TreadWright GuardDog MT's. Ran 'em both on my FJ80 and my FJ40. Both sets have been 295 /16's and have performed flawlessly on road, and when aired-down to <10 psi and wheeled hard they never cried a tear! I've never popped a bead on them, and I've been running stock Toyota wheels.

The GuardDog's are grippy as hell in the rocks and slickrock of Moab, and they clear mud really well too. I opted for the non-KedgeGrip model, but I hear praises for that additive on their compound.

On my current build-up, I'm running the same reliable GuardDog's - why spend 2x more on a set of new ones and get equal performance? They stand behind their product, and have a warranty you won't even need!

I received mine a few days ago, so far have put about 40 miles on them. They are Guard dogs 265/75r16's. You are able to specify which brand carcass you want, however, they may not have that brand available. I wanted goodyear sidewalls, they did not have them, so I chose BFG sidewalls instead.

Initial impressions :They appear well made, the guy who mounted my tires said they were "beautiful tires", not knowing they were retreads. They took a fair amount of weight to balance. Going down the road they wander more than the Goodyear Wranglers they replaced, I think this is due more to the larger sidewall and mud terrain tread than any issue with the construction of the tires. They are obviously louder than the all terrains, it is more of a high pitched whine, not a big deal really, even on an Xterra which doesn't have much sound deadening. With the radio on you can barely notice.

The sidewalls are in good shape, no cracking or nicks. The oldest tire was a 2009. Both sides are blackwalls. You can see in the close ups where the cap meets the sidewall.

Shipping from SD to FL was quick, 4 days to my door via FedEx.

Time for a couple inches of body lift!

I thought it was a pretty well known fact, and would have thought it was a higher percentage than 70%. Anyway, blowing a tire on a rig with 17 other wheels and losing a tire on a 4-wheeled vehicle is a bit different.

There are a plenty of these threads, but what it comes down to is this: Fact is, the carcasses are used. USED, which means the risk of failure is certainly higher than new. That's just the facts. Taking that into consideration, you just have to see if the worth of your dollars outweigh that risk or not. Some people just can't afford to buy new, so it's a viable option to go with retreads. Some (like me) are cheap-wads that try to get the most for the dollar, no matter what. Others can afford it and it's not worth it for them to get retreads.

I certainly cheap out on some things. But even for a cheap cheap-wad like me, I can't skimp on tires. This is not an oil filter or timing belt where failure means at worst, messed up engine. I couldn't live with myself if I tried to save a couple hundred bucks only to wreck my car and have something happen to my wife or kids. Granted, even new equipment fails, but I certainly like to try and lessen that risk in any way possible.

But good luck with the purchase. Hope they work out.
