Probably an odd question...
If I turn my engine off, but fail to put the vehicle in park, and roll back about half a foot, does this cause damage to the transmission?:hmm:

No.

I like to pull on parking brake, then slip into natural while letting off foot brake. Once slack of parking brake has been taken up, I then put into park. This keeps pressure off transmission locking pin.

What if I was in drive when the vehicle was rolling backwards while the engine is off. There was no resistance so maybe it was in N as default when the engine is off....

You're fine.

Slamming into parker while rolling may be bad, not into drive or N.
