hi there all,
i recently tried to seperate my 3 speed trans and tcase, for my '68, to replace the gasket between the two and didnt realize i needed to take the huge nut off the back of the output shaft. so, when i seperated the two it didnt come apart right. now i cant seem to get the two back together correctly and i found the "shifting key no. 2" (from the hayne's manual exploded veiw) in the bottom. my question is, is it very hard to take the output shaft and input shaft out and find where this key goes? or should i just scrap this and go with a different tranny?

thanks in advance,
Logan

just had this happen to me! i decided to replace both front and rear bearings and the needle bearings because it came that far apart anyway. what you gotta do is remove the front shaft from the trans(good time to repace the front bearing cause your going to have to move the bearing on the shaft any way) next pull the back shaft so you can remove the entire unit that the shift fork rides on, once that is off put it on a bench and reassemble the shift keys in that unit, with the synchros in place, and then take that put it back in the trans where you found it. the needle bearings will have fallen out of the front shaft when you removed it from the trans so put them back in there holding them there with grease. now tap the front bearing that is pressed on the front shaft forward about a 1/2 to 3/4 an inch for the shaft gears to clear the housing of the trans. line every thing up and tapp the front bearing back into place making sure the back bearing does not pop out while your doing it because if it fell apart while you where taking it apart its just like mine and really loose(try putting it up against a wall while you tap) hope this helps if you have any questions pm me
