I am going to be doing a "Rodney Flush" on my 89' FJ-62. I also what to clean the ATF filter. After I have removed the 20+ bolts on the trannsmission oil pan, what do I do about the hose that is connected to the front of the pan? Does it have a union that needs to be undone. What is the function of this hose?

Are you referring to the metal pipe? If so, that is the dipstick tube. There is a union about 4 inches up the pipe that is a slip fit with an oring.

When I removed the pan, the procedure I used was 1) remove dipstick, 2) remove 20 bolts, 3) separate pan, 4) wiggle pan to separate the pan tube from the upper dipstick tube.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that is just what I needed to know.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that just because you drained the pan that everything is empty and it's not gonna drool any fluid on you. It will drip ATF for days, so plan to keep a drain pan under it the entire time.

KLF is right. Ask me how I know. :)

Even worse if you pull the valve body, downright annoying if you have to pull it twice

ATF pan removal!!

Trying to change my ATF filter and am having trouble removing the pan. Is there a secret to dropping it down. I've wacked on it with a rubber mallet for awhile now and it hasn't budged. Thanks

Ok, got the pan down. Now, what is remommended to clean out the pan and the magnets off?

Carb cleaner or brake cleaner. I also used it to clean the metal screen, afer I took it off. The screen really needed it.

thanks. My first time doing this so I'll be picking your brain. I'm assuming that I should coat the gasket with ATF before I put it on? Also, some of the old gasket stayed on the main housing (the part that is still on the truck) What's the best way to get that off? Once again, thank you

I don't think it is needed, but I used a gasket sealer and put a very thin coat on both sides of the gasket. A scraper of some sort should get the gasket off. Just make sure it is all removed and clean on the mating surfaces.

Make sure you get that screen cleaned out real good. Mine had clutch-pack residue everywhere. Those bolts don't need much torque. Follow the FSM.
