I wouldn't trust a motorcycle jack. No way. Safety first.

You can use your winch (or your neighbor's winch) through the hole in the floor too. Rig a snatch block to the cage and get to work! You pulling the trans on the 40 or the Troopy? What fer? Sorry I'll miss this one...always fun to hang out, :wrench:, poke fun and drink yer ! :hillbilly:

engine hoist works well also.

anything is good heck even just a couple guys under it and some muscle.

You don't think a Motorcycle jack that can lift a 700 lb. bike is beefy enough to do
a 300 lb tranny/transfer case?

So you mean to tell me that a cruiser tranny and t-case weighs more than a Harley Electra Glide? :meh:

Trust me its fine. It has wheels, you can lock them in place. You can strap the transmission to it for extra safety if thats what your concern is.

EDIT: Thanks Lane. Didn't see your post when I posted mine.

Did that before to with a mini truck tranny and the one in my Tacoma but it sucks.

Pulling the 2H/H41/TC out of Flippers recent troopy import and will be selling it. Pulling my 2H with bad head out of the troopy for V8 swap. Nothing happening to the 40, thank goodness!

Too bad you're not around...lots of :wrench:ing and  in the near future.

It's a motorcycle jack for a reason. Even though it might be able to lift 700lb. Why take the chance? It was not designed to be used on trucks. Or it wouldn't be called a motorcycle jack it would be called a tranny jack. But hey do what you want. Just hope no one gets hurt.

Chris you must either a) not work on your own junk. or b) have the space and cash for a vehicle lift and transmission lift.

As far as I know they don't sell tranny hoist for the back yard mechanic that does this kind of stuff laying on their back. If you find one please let me know I might consider buying it. Yes you could go though the tranny hump but I would see that as more difficult and risky.

I think the problem you'll have with using a motorcycle lift as a tranny jack is it being too big, it will take up too much room under the truck. Plus it won't have any ability to adjust the angle that it's holding the tranny, which is important. I would have no concerns about safety, as long as you're careful to secure the tranny/transfer to the lifting platform with ratchet straps or a chain.

My tranny jack is a homemade jig that I fabbed up from some scrap steel and wood, it bolts to my floor jack. It looks pretty redneck but it works really well, I've lost count of the number of trannys I've used it on. The throwout bearing just grenaded in Steve's truck the other day, so it's gonna see action again soon.

i just use a small japanese american boy no need for fancy jacks ;p

I can't speak for Chris and how he gets work done on his ride. But I can comment on this part. There are several diffent designs of transmission jack to be used by folks crawling around on the floor. Most rental places have them if you don't want to buy one too. Harbor Freight and Northern Tool sell a few...

The links are knock-offs of made in USA professional trans jacks designed to work from the floor under a vehicle. I've used examples of each and all will do the job. The top link is probably the nicest version for Cruiser work and also the most common available from rental places. I've also used my engine hoist to R&R the trans in my fullsize van; worked but not my favorite way. Also used a lift and underlift jacks and hoists; much nicer. If you have the means I highly recommend a lift and related tools.

I think the motorcycle jack would work fine. Heck, I looked at one when the local parts store had it on clearance just for doing transmission swaps. I end up not using the tilt of a trans jack much; blocking the trans at the angle I want or just moving it to where it needs to go as I'm installing it seems to work fine for me.
