Got my first look under the hood of a 100 series today. My boss bought a new 2004 and we both could not locate a dipstick to check the level for the auto tran. I figured it would have one similar to the 80 series. So how do you check the level of the atf?

OK, does anyone check the level, color, or smell of their ATF in their 100? If so, how?

The 2004 is the new 5 speed transmission and for 2004 they switched to a new ATF called WS (world standard). Toyota also eliminated the dip stick for 2004. If you check out the owners manual Toyota feels that the 2004 5 speed does not require servicing unless you tow with your LC. If you tow they recommend that you have Toyota service your transmission at 60K miles, you can only use the WS ATF because it is not compatible with any other ATF and only Toyota has it. If you mix the WS with any other ATF your transmission will not function correctly (I was told it would start to slip and then quit working :( ) Tell your boss that when Toyota changes his oil they look for leaks, no leaks equal no transmission fluid level problems. Hope this answers your question. By the way they use the same transmission in the Lexus GX470, LX470 Toyota 4runner, non of them have dip sticks for 2004.
