just bought a 1988 fj62 272000 miles looks pristine no rust interior great only thing not working is auto door locks and ac but in shop :pnow to have ac repaired.
Question guy before me had tranny replaced with used but shifts kind of hard and leaks out of front little what am I looking at for repair or rebuild on tranny?
Question 2 engine runs good now but where in Jacksonville Florida area would be the best place to have it rebuilt right. And how much should it run for these 2 things to be done.
How long can these things go on 272000 miles is alot?????????

Welcome, find the cruiser club in your area, ask those guys.Better yet join that club ,go to a meeting one of them probably knows whats wrong with it!

If your transmission is shifting hard check / adjust the linkages. I believe it's the kickdown cable. I have not done this personally. The trany leak should be accessed and fixed.
Your engine should last forever, tune it up and keep feeding it oil. A short block is around $800 or cheaper if you get it from someone on here. Run it until it goes then throw in a used one with less mileage.
Start small, repair things one at a time and ask more specific questions.

expect around $2500 if the tranny dies and needs to be rebuilt
adjust the linkages carefully
flush it and run synthetic ATF... add an aux cooler.

cross your fingers.

a hard shift does not bother me personally
a slipping flaring shift or a refusal to shift is another story :(

an aux cooler should be considered a must on every FJ62 IMHO

If you are thinking of building the rig...big tires and stock gears are hard on an auto... a lot more load. a lot more heat. Make sure your gears and tires are appropriately matched.

Mark...
