Was just cruising along down the hwy when the light turned yellow. Slammed on the brakes then when I went to proceed, horrid grinding in every gear.

Managed to push the truck off the road and to a safe spot and organized a trailer ride home.

Any ideas on what it could be before I just throw it at my mechanic? Was planning to be at Cruise Moab next week but maybe not now. Glad it happened here and not in the depths of Moab gnarnia.

First time I’ve been sidelined by a LC. :(
 
A little more info maybe? Like what were you doing as you were slowing down? Where you rowing through the gears as you came to a stop? Did you just put clutch in and shifted to neutral? Then when you started again is when it started making noise?

It was a sudden stop from 65. Clutch in and braked hard. Have never stopped that hard before. Put it in gear when the light turned green and nothing but grinding.
 
When I try to nurse it forward, it tries to go and then as soon as the wheels start to rotate, it slips and grinds. No matter 2wd or 4wd or low
 
I hit my carrier bearing HARD wheeling in my long bed Hilux... the rubber was starting to go and it was enough to seperate it on the drive home. It sounded like someone hammering my bed. Not sure if 75 utes have a carrier bearing though. Hope it nothing serious. If the tranny mount moved or sheared there are plenty of unsavory things that can happen....Fingers crossed for you
 
Opened the transfer up (HF1A). The input shaft splines are completely stripped. What could have caused this? Oil starvation? Will post pics soon
 
They have a habit of draining the transfer into the gearbox when the seal between both fail if you check your gearbox it will be overfilled. Australian short term fix was to run a 1/2 inch hose between both fill plugs so when the seal lets go the pipe will balance both out until you pull the transfer to repair the seal. Most leave the pipe hooked up if it even after the fix good insurance if it happens again.

Or make your own from the pics above drill out both fill plugs tap holes screw in fittings add shortest length of pipe that fits.

Had this setup on my 60. I knew I needed it on my 75 but was putting it off for any number of excuses. Now, the price has been paid. Procrastinate now, pay later

Stripped splines. Everyone I’ve talked to is dumbfounded as to how or why this happened. No one has seen it before in this box.
 
This is common, seen heaps of trans input shafts go like this. Its actually designed by toyota to be the wear part or weakest link in the drive train, so this breaks first and saves gears, diffs,etc. That's why it's so easy to replace it's just transfer off and split case and it's right there looking at you. A lot easier than a crown wheel / pinion or opening a gearbox. Under heavy load, mud tyres, off-roading, towing, low range work, skids, etc they normally go around the 180-200k klms range. If you baby your truck they last the life of the box.
 
Sorry it happened to you , but some great information followed from the community .
That recirculation hose part/trick is cool . I’d say most likely oil starvation was your issue , since you were just driving normal when it happened . Zero warning ? There were no strange sounds prior to failure ? I would expect some unusually louder than normal whining sound from the t case prior to destruction . I’m curious since mine is making noise at 65 mph and higher , but mine has a t case from a 80 series .

The recirculation hose will only work on the h55f box as there is only 1 seal between them. On the h151 and h150f boxes the transfer cases are their own separate entity and it's not possible for oil to go from one to another.
