Got an H42 with a transfer case from a parts truck I bought. Ran fine then started sticking in 4wd and now it's stuck in neutral. can't get it to even grind gears getting into any slot on ther xfer case.

What causes this and am I screwed?

John

Crawl under and have someone move the shifter while you see if the linkage is actually moving things like it's supposed to.

If it is I guess you could have broken a shifter fork for the 4wd....

I did hear a small ping so maybe that was it. What does a shifter fork repair entail? Never worked on a transfer case.

A broken 4wd shift fork would not have anything to do with range selection.....

I would bet the linkage is not connected to the range selector lever on the top of the transfer case, or, that something in the linkage to the range selector lever has come apart.

Get under the truck and look at things.

If it's the 4wd fork, not much. 4 bolts and pull the assembly off the t-case. Find a new assembly or a shift fork, put it back in. See pic of this assembly.

If it's the hi-lo fork you will be dropping the t-case.

Poser is suggesting you check the linkage circled in the second pic. He's probably correct and the repair will be easy. ;)

Bingo- cotter pin on the linkage snapped and an arm from the shifter to the xfer case was swinging free. it was basically a paper clip holding it on. Also found a nut missing off the back end of the clutch linkage set up.

thanks!

Lucky in the fact I have zero mechanical skills but this one was easy. Hopefullt this was all that is wrong!
