Well, at 411k, I had my first drive train failure in my 1991 FJ80. Guess I had small leak in the transfer case that I never noticed and it went dry. I ordered a transfer case from a salvage yard from a 93, that was advertised as fitting vehicles as early as 91.

Well, the tail housing is longer on the 93. And I'm outside of my window for returns. So my questions are:

1) Will my 91 tail housing bolt right onto the 93 transfer case?

2) Is my 91 tailhousing likely to be damaged along with the rest of the case?

3) Is there anything else I will need to swap between these transfer cases? Everything else looks the same.

Thank you for your time!

The ends can swap, the longer end has a viscous coupler in it. The driveshaft length is different depending on which length rear TCase housing you have.

Edit to add, no real way to know if the output shaft is messed up until you tear down the TCase.

Thanks for your input Jeffro. I supposed I could also simply find a 93-97 driveshaft, and that would drop in with the new transmission?

Yes you could run a later driveshaft for the correct length.
