So, it scared the bejeeeuz out of me. I'm driving along after a dyno tune and I get this metal-on-metal scraping noise. Sounds like the big ends have gone. Lift off, noise goes away. Light pedal on the gas it starts up again. Hopw many RPM did they pull on my 6.0 LS2 ??????

Is my engine going to sieze before I get home ? I start babying it and have a real good listen to the noise. It's a light metallic hi frequency 'ting' noise. Hmm, that 'ting' noise sounds too light for big ends, sounds more like the sound you get when a rock flicks up and hits the underswide of the car, just happening incredibly fast and in proportion to speed.

When I get home, I look under the car and the rear tail shaft studs have been scraping on that tin hat thing on the back of the transfer case. It's sitting cockeyed and not square to the transfer case. Can I just put a few drops of loctite on the protuding bit and tap it home (flush) with the back of the case ?

A pic would say 1000 words, but I'm not under my truck at the moment.

I had the same thing happen when I put my case back in after part timing it. I just used a flat tipped screwdriver to pry it back into place...been good and quite ever since.

Does it go flush all the way 'round the transfer case ? Hate to lever or tap something past where it's meant to go !

This is how it should look.

A snall hammer and a couple flat head screw drivers should be all you need to pop it back into place. Pay close attention that you
A) get the inner half seated properly.
B) ensure there is no contact with the outer half.

Put the xfer case in nuetral and drop the shafts...or get the wheels off the ground so that you can spin the rear output shaft to make sure nothing it's loose or touching the other half of the high hat as you put it.

Job done, thanks for the tip. Small pry bar, gentle leverage and it just eased home like it was a brought one.
No more clanging, cheers.

late joining in but i think its happening to me just now. I just got my case switched.
Did it look like this?

That's what happened. Did the same thing, pry it back in gently with a screwdriver. it worked!
