I want to try to remove breather on my transfer case and clean it until I can get time to install vent hose to firewall. With enough contortion I've found I can reach it "sorta". How is it held in place? Threaded? Press fit? Is it identical to the axle breathers? It feels like there's a hex shape around the base of it, but not sure.

Chuck here is a pic of the breather on my 1971 transfer case. I just happen to have mine out and lying around in the spare bedroom. I dont think that they would be much different throughout the years. The largest spanner I had in my tool kit was 26mm and it was too small. I am thinking it is 27mm. It just unscrews straight out of the top of the transfer. If you are taking it out you may as well fit the extension on then.

Thanks!!!!!! Couldnt be a better picture. I'm going to try to remove it to clean it, then put it back. About 4 months away from the breather tube project, but I know this is plugged up right now. If too messed up, there goes my schedule and off comes the trans hump!

People are always talking about removing breather and tapping hole for hose connector. If the breather screws in why do you need to tap it? Why can't you use existing threaded hole?

I wanted to do the same, and just did the 'pop the cap off' and declog with weedeater string .

Don't know if it fixed my very slow transfer leak yet,
but it was certainly clogged.

On my 76 will definitely be room to put a hose on the nipple and zip tie... thanks for all your help over the years MUD!
