feeling a very small thunk when my LC is in drive and i either accelerate from a stop or come to a stop (doesn't happen every time). Also feeling a little vibration in the shifter that coincides with the "thunk". It's almost imperceptible, but I'm pretty observant of this stuff. I'm sure my wife could drive it for another 50K miles without noticing.

I thought it may be the transmission mounts and when I described it to a mechanic buddy of mine (not a Toyota mechanic) he also thought it may be the trans mount. Anyone else ever experience something similar? Trans mounts are cheap. Hoping that's what it is.

Not that this will solve it but I'm also planning to bring it in and get all the fluids replaced.

Try greasing it. 200's and 100's are similar this way. Good, cheap first place to start.

if what you are describing is similar to my truck - this is mitigated by lubing the propeller shaft. It will come back, and its mostly normal for these trucks.

To be even more specific, it's probably the slip joint on the rear driveshaft that needs to be greased. Your description is exactly the symptoms so often discussed in the 100s forum. There is even a long thread there titled "The Official Driveshaft Clunk Thunk Thread".

So hopefully that's it then. Just grease up the slip joint on the rear drive shaft and see if that takes care of it...

If it is the rear drive/prop shaft, known issue, at least on the early 200's. There is a TSB on it and mine was replaced by the dealer no charge.

This has been a shortcoming of this driveline design since at least 2006, that I know of. I used to have a Sequioia back then (OK, my wife had it) that would kick you so hard it felt like being rearended. The dealer denied there was a problem for a year, until Toyota issued a Service Notice (or whatever they call them). I haven't noticed this on my 2008 LX, but I have heard it hasn't gone away completely.

Talk to the dealer, there may be some free relief. If not, grease the splines, especially after underbody car washes or driving through dust/dry dirt.

Toyota Dealership told me I would have to have mine taking apart to grease it. Took it to the lexus dealer and the greased it without a question and have had no issues for over 40,000 miles. I'm at 175,000 miles.

I found the TSB that Toyota sent out. Seems like its only valid while he 60 month 60K mile powertrain warranty is active.

Since I've only had my LC for a few weeks I called the Toyota dealership I bought it from. They seem like they'd be willing to take care of it, but it's a 9 hour round trip. Maybe I'll talk to them and see if they can reach out to a local dealer to assist.

Any Toyota dealer should take care of it, not just the one you bought it from. Good luck.

So I contacted the dealership I purchased it from and since I've only had it for a month they seemed open to the idea of taking care of it for me. I'm just not sure if it's worth taking the 9 hour round trip to get it done.

I also contacted Toyota directly to see if it would be covered if I brought it to another dealership and they said that a TSB being issued is just to make dealerships aware of common problems, how to diagnose and fix them, but that since it's out of warranty it's not covered. It would have to be a recall for it to be covered.

I went to a local dealership and 30 min later it was done. No more thunk. You may not need shaft change and just greasing.

I'm not opposed to going the grease route. If the thunks gone I'll be happy. Just figured I'd explore all options (that do not involve me paying for a replacement non thunking drive shaft) first.

Regardless if you end up replacing the shaft, you should periodically grease the shafts and spiders.

I would recommend a good maintenance schedule of greasing front and rear drive shafts (all 3 zerks) at every oil change.

These are industrial implements with AC, cooler center consoles and leather seats.

:)
