This past weekend ventured a ways back into the Boreal Forest following mining trails and such just as we ferried out a couple of folks a leak was noticed coming from the bj70. Oil was pouring out laced with shiny metal filings, lots of them!
The only notice was 10-20 seconds of whining when in coasting situations. Truck was in 2h hadn't been in 4lo or hi since front end replacement of leaking axle seal so I don't see the two are connected. Question now is what caused this failure and how to prevent it happening again.

Looks like the bolt broke off that holds the mainshaft in position allowing it with the gears to slide back grinding that hole in the transfer case. My spare overdrive box had this happen halfway around Australia to the previous owner. Looking at photo 1 something has taken the bolt head right off from the damage under it. I'm guessing rock crawling with no bash plate.

Has the idler shaft fallen out completely & disappeared?

As Ozcruiser says, it looks like the bolt that holds the tab that holds that shaft in place has sheared off. I'll be adding that bolt to the things I check when I'm under the truck!

Cheers
Clint

She dead! :(

Either the idler retainer plate came loose and/or the idler bearings seized and spun the idler so hard it sheered it right off. It's my guess that your gears are pretty hammered and every bearing will be too :(

We have a handful of NOS brand new OE cases for sale, $1400 if that sparks any interest? Same case through the US parts system would be $2300? They come 2:1, we can pre-load with our 3:1 and 4:1 gear sets too

Otherwise see if you can't find someone local with a good used 60/62 case. Easy enough to make either work as you have a donor parts case :D

I had to drive my BF1A for about 30 mins with virtually no oil and grinding noise ( unclear at the time where it was coming from ) .. the tale of my story it's those are pretty stout t-cases .. it must be seriously neglected for a whit for this to happen ..

I'll take you up on a case with 4:1 gears on the side. What's the best way to track you down?

Give us a ring here at the shop. That is an intro offer price and just as from Toyota they don't including any shift linkage, input gear/hardware or flanges. All stuff we have to match your needed application though :D
