I've got a coworker whose son has an '87 FJ60 with 300K. The transmission stopped going into reverse yesterday. It will go forward into all 4 speeds though. Anybody interested or willing to look at it or fix it for him? He's called a couple places to try to get quotes and I told him I'd see if any of the 'experts' here had the time or interest in checking it out. He also mentioned that the previous owner had some kind of overdrive system installed. He said after you get to 4th on the highway, you flip a lever and it goes into overdrive. He doesn't understand it well enough to explain it to me and I don't understand it well enough to know what he's talking about.

Sounds like he's got an aftermarket overdrive of some sort, like a ranger or something.

No help with working on that one, but if he gets desperate, I've got a late model 60 series H42 (with the spacer) that I could be talked into parting with.

Have him try pulling up hard on the gearshift while trying to get it into reverse, it could be as simple as the shift lever seat. I know I've read about H series transmissions having that issue in the past...

Thanks for the suggestion Dan. I'll let him know.

I just remembered, walking past it, that I have the '85 tranny from your Marc. I would easily be willing to let it go.

Might not work with an 87 unless it's got the spacer also.

I'll talk to the guy on Monday and see what he wants to do.
