Hey, I just picked up an 82 fj60. Will a 4spd from an 87 mate up to the t-case and bell housing?

Yes, but don't do it.

What are you trying to accomplish?

The 87 transmission will be longer than the 82. After 4/85 or so toyota added a spacer to make the 4 speed the same length as the 5 speed manual transmission. To make this work, you will have to change the driveshaft lengths and transfer shift linkage. You may also have to use the transfer case from the '87. Do a search on H55F (5 speed) swap. the 87 transmission is the same length as the H55F, folks swapping the 5 speed into their "early" FJ60's will be facing the same situation.

I just did this but in reverse. I got a tras/transfer from an 83' and put it in place of my 87's ailing unit. I got the driveshafts from the donor and had to swap the differential-end flanges of the drivesafts because 83's and 87's have a different pattern. The transfer case shifter slid into the hole in the floorpan just like the 87's did. I'm a shadetree mechanic at best, and I completed the swap in about 4 hours. good luck
