I was wondering if i can get some inputs to my problem...The tranny is a 4spd tranny (87 fj-60). When it is cold I have a hard time shifting to 2nd gear and sometime it will grind into 2nd, But after driving for awhile after it warms up i can shift into 2nd gear no problem at all no grinds or anything. Any ideas? I was planing on draining out the fluid and fill it back up with GM syncomesh gear oil. I used this fluid on my grinding honda trannys and it showed improvements. I know I know this is not a honda tranny. Also if i was to change the fluids is the fluids for the tranny and the transfer case separate? If so how man QT. does each one take? and how many QT's does the front and rear diff. take also. thanks for the help guys.

It's been way too long since I remember how much everything takes, but your trans and transfer both were designed for 90 weight. I know nothing about the GM fluid, but I'd go back to stock and take it from there. Difficult shifting in the 4 speed often means the shifter seat is worn, it's an inexpensive part and easy fix, requires removing the shifter cane, the ball on the cane rides on the seat. There are many descriptions on here of the process, check search and tech. Front and rear diff also 90 wt, fill until it runs out the filler hole.

you should check your levels. It could be that the seal between the transmission and transfer is leaking and your transmission is low on oil. That being said, my H55F is very hard to shift into second when it is cold and it has been since new. Once I've driven a few miles, it gets easier. You are not in a really cold climate, though, but neither am I (SF area). Capacities are below.

I don't think you can fix the problem, it sounds like normal behavior.

I've had good results putting the t-case in N, and the tranny in gear while the truck warms up. It seems to warm it up enough to shift smooth from the start.

This will help some and it's what I do on cold mornings. T-case in N and tranny in 3rd.
