1. Hello

2. Just bought my first Toyota an 89 FJ-62 and heard there is some good info here. I have been a Jeep Cherokee guy for about a decade but have always been a fan of any solid axle SUV, especially the Land Cruiser.

3. I've checked the FAQ and did a search but cannot locate my exact situation. Cruiser starts fine and idles a tad rough and high 1100-1200 RPM but when I put it in R/D/3/2/L the RPMs lower to 800. The kicker is when I drive the motor hesitates between 1500 and 2100 RPM about 75% of the time...doesn't matter whether D/3/2/L.

I checked all the fluids are within limits (tranny could use a change and will in a day of so) and changed out the fuel filter (seemed like a good place to start?). I have the MAF 62 Ignition kit on the way, a PCV and a TPS. Judging from my Cherokee (blasphemy I'm sure) I'm betting it is the TPS.

Any thoughts on the high Idle? Any thoughts on the hesitation with the tranny engaged?

TIA

will

When warm it should idle at ~650. My first thought is the same as your's, TPS. Also check the air filter, the 3FE is notorious for being sensitive to a dirty filter.

Definitely take care of the tranny. Many consider the A440F auto the weak link for the 62, and they produce a lot of heat. Adding an aux cooler down flow from the stock unit in the rad is a fairly common upgrade. When taken care of, it's possible to get up over 300 000 miles on the original unit. Make sure your throttle cable and kick-down cable don't have slop in them, or the combo will feel real weak.

A good tune-up is always a big help with a new truck that has an unknown history. When I got mine, the dizzy cap was burnt to rat-s*&%, changing that and the fuel filter made the engine feel a ton better. Check your plugs and wires too.

I'll take a look and see if I can find a thread with details on checking the TPS.

And welcome :flipoff2:

Rockdoc is correct on all accounts but in this case he just might be right on the tps....get a Factory service manual and check for codes. You can do this without a external computer all you need to do is count the blinks.

Your tranny is not a concern at this point but get the cooler installed

Mine is also a bit sluggish and idles rough sometimes. I did a complete tune-up and its still there. After alot of searching I am replacing the fuel pressure regulator. If you search FPR you might find this is your issue as well.

I understand the improper fuel pressure, restrictive airflow or a weak ignition component could make it idle/run rough. What gets me is it mostly happens when the tranny is involved in the mix, i.e. R/D/3/2/L. When the shifter is in P/N the motor idles a tad high but will rev and return to approx starting RPM with no hesitation. It will also hold various RPMs with no problems.

I plan on replacing the TPS in the morning and I am going to sift through the manuals I have tonight to see if I can find anything out that I might be missing. I still need to change the tranny fluid and filter but I was going to take it in for that ( I am a suspension and metals guy not a 85% of the rest of the vehicle guy..hahaha).

Are there any other sensors that are conected to the tranny that might "talk" dirty to the engine? Could it be a CAT problem that only surfaces when the engine is under load?

I'll keep working it but...$$$$$...hahaha

Hi Will,

Welcome to our little addiction. Many folks that enter this domain are never seen again. :D

How many miles are on the FJ62. Does the transmission shift ok when you are driving it around town?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks yet? With years or use and all those wonderful vacuum lines under the hood and corrosion on smog junk, it is possible to be a leak in one or more lines.

The Crusty crab ran like crap too when I first drove it home. It was very ruff and got worst under a load. The transmission worked fine and shifted good. After I replaced he spark plugs, spark plug wires, Fixed some of the vacuum leaks I could locate, and a few other things I cant remember right at this moment... it ran great with 270,000 miles on the ticker.

I had an 1985 4runner with the 22RE with a similar issue and it also would not pass smog test. I did all the above and still had the problem. There were no vacuum leaks and everything else seemed good when I tested it according to the Toyota FSM.
I finally took the throttle body off and using the FSM I calibrated everything on it and or related to it. Problem solved.

Today I changed the Tranny fluid (along with the diffs and T-case) and made a rookie mistake changing the TPS. I never matched up the new TPS part numbers with the one that was on the Cruiser before I took the damn thing apart. Luckily someone ran me to the parts store and after some research I received the correct TPS. The problem was that even though my FJ was built in July of 89 it needed the before March 89 TPS...who knows.

After letting the FJ idle, working the shifter and giving the computer time to adjust it seems to be running much better. I only drove it about 5 miles so far but am feeling confident. There is still a tad bit of hesitation but I want to give the computer some more time before I change anything else.

Another plus is that the idle has come down to 700ish and it seems to shift smoother.

The PO said he had changed the rotor, cap, wires and plugs recently and they look good. I am sill going to change the Coil and igniter and PCV valve when they arrive.

Good to hear you have the problem licked Will.

If the idle is still a bit high, you can tweak it with the large flathead screw on the throttle body facing the front.
