Big price difference here between the TransGo DIY kit for $90, and the complete Nomad valve body kit @ $1200 Wholesale Automatic Transmissions - Besides not having to breakdown the valve body yourself, anyone know what the benefit is to justify spending an extra $1k on the Nomad? I've noticed a mild slip shifting into 2nd and I'd like to tighten up the shift points. I'm in the process of installing a WitsEnd turbo so I need to address the tranny response with the added torque. I'm not a tranny expert, just looking for some general input on the subject.

I’ve got a spare valve body. I’ll drop in a trans go kit it and sell it for $900 no core....

Transgo and go. Buddy of mine has one holding Cummins power in his cruiser that can float the torque converter lockup on command at 30lbs of boost. even with a new converter had to dial back the boost a little. The original had 250k 30 of which was with the Cummins. old one got really bad over 30k miles.

Depends on intended use and preference. Have removed and sold, at least one of the bang zoom valve bodies. What feels great for high range/street is often way too much for tech type wheeling, easy to induce wheel spin, traction loss, when you don't want it, attempting to hold a line.

The first step is to adjust the "kick down" cable, try it with the nut almost pushing the boot off and see what that results. Have done this mod a bunch of times, made it firm enough that we had to back off the cable to get the preferred result.

well documented first to second transition can be more aggressive. when I wheel i use the shiftier to control hold 1st and use drive wit second gear start button.

Many have only drilled the 1-2 shift point smaller than the street application recommendation.

Try getting ahold of Michael at westcoastcruisers.com
He had a couple new Wholesale Automatics trans kits that have been hanging around for a while. Might get a good deal...

If you are interested in a WAT Nomad valve body, call Georg at Valley Hybrids.

Ive read your post, great writeup with some great information, I'll definitely make an adjustment to the cable. From what I've read it's highly recommended when increasing the torque, or in this case doubling the torque with this turbo to do the valve body. Should help with the life of the tranny.

... I'll definitely make an adjustment to the cable. ...

That makes a difference, but adjusting the main pressure regulator is significant.

Resurrecting. To the original post’s question, is the Nomad an actual redesign or is it essentially a valve body with the TransGo kit installed?

That depends on what you consider "redesign". The Nomad is a bored OEM valve body (that's why they want your core), so it's the same design as OEM. AFAIK, and I don't have either in front of me, both depend on increased shift spool bores and larger valve spools.

So the Nomad is the same as an Installed/bored TransGo kit? or are they different? I haven’t gotten much clarity on that. If anyone can speak with knowledge and/or experience with both, that would be helpful.

Wholesale Automatics does

Transgo is a DIY Kit that where you move a few check balls, swap out a few springs and drill out orifices in the valve body plate (plate sandwiched between the two halves). Not much else to the Transgo. Install can be daunting if you have never opened up a valve body before and/or if you drop things and don't know/cant find where their homes are. Been there done that on sending check balls ever where, not fun when you aren't sure if you found/got them all in the right spot. You also need to provide both gaskets for the valve body plate and a new strainer.

Nomad is not quite the same as just tossing in a transgo kit. They use a proprietary Valve body plate that is visibly different when you unpackage it that already has orifice changes done to it that are similar but different than the transgo, they also bore/machine out orifices in the two halves, include the necessary accumulator springs (like transgo), include necessary gaskets and new strainer. Install is much easier and does not require opening and potentially losing components.

Think of the Nomad as completing the job all the way and the transgo is doing a 90% job. 90% may be good for some hence it being a diy kit and for others having the complete package and ease of install justifies the price.

Thanks. It’s hard to find reliable firsthand knowledge on any car forums. There are plenty of internet experts that have just-so stories and baseless opinions.
