My tranny keeps forgetting to shift down to first when I stop. At first it was just when I went over a speed humps. Now all of a sudden when I floor it to cut off your priest on my way to the bar (apologies), it stutters before pulling its shorts up and getting into 1st. Ive never flushed it so it’s probably due…

Anybody had similar issues?

Just for giggles, do you have your vehicle set to start in second gear?
This is an option on many automatics for driving on ice or snow. Starting in second gear will help prevent spinning the wheels when taking off from a stop.
Check to see if it's on.

First thing I checked. No. Some guys of gxor fb said a fluid change might clear it up.

I would start with fluid drain/fills but could be a solenoid as well if that doesn't pan out. Have you tried seeing if any pending codes have been set with TS or OBD Link?

No codes. Was hoping you’d chime in. Saw your extensive post on the tranny solenoid issues in another post. Hoping its not that since it looked like it was a tranny removal and tear down to fix the sending lines.

You may want to do a pan drop and filter swap at your mileage as well.

What happens when you put over S mode and manually place it in first?

It could be registering as pending but I'd think something like this would trigger a code unless the failure is falling outside of detection logic.

Ever see any errant gear indicator selections? Against that would typically register a code though.

Can you break down ‘errant gear indicator selection’ for me? When I put it in D it goes forward, when I put it in R it goes backwards : )

If the gear indicator goes blank it can be a faulty neutral switch on the external housing of the transmission but that seems to always trigger a code and often make for a physically sticky gearshift. Doubt that is the case here though.

Fingers crossed ... assuming fresh fluid helps. It could just be a sticky S1 solenoid above from that FSM screenshot.

I’ll look for that tomorrow too but I doubt it. I probably would have noticed.

It's beginning to sound like a new Wasting time in the Woods may be in the making soon!

Does not immediately trigger a CEL. If the OP has these symptoms, P0705 could be pending. Either way, scan for codes ASAP and address the issue immediately. Otherwise your in for a costly repair. Ask me how I know.

I opened up techstream, connected to engine ect and don't see any pending codes car was not running, does that matter?

The ‘d’ displays when Im in gear. I can sequence through the gears manually no problem. When I shift to manual when Im stopped, it goes to 4th. Should it go to 1st when in a full stop? Definitely sluggish and stumbles to shift down when I accel from a stop so it may just be only downshifting to 4th when I stop.

That is just a gear up restrictor and normal.

Throw over into manual and pull it down so it says it is first gear.

Still feeling sluggish?

So many possible TS tests ones can do with AT...I'll be honest ..hard to tell you where to start if codes aren't showing up. IMO: Cheapest start would be fluid swaps.

Jake, hoping it's something simple and cheap! Those types of problems can leave one with a sick feeling in the stomach every time you get in to drive it.
Kinda takes all the joy out of it.
:(

I got this resolved today. I found a really good tranny shop in Tempe, AZ (Tri-City Transmission) and after going through it they told me what two Toyota dealers missed.... Two quarts low on tranny fluid. That's it. When i suggested a Tranny service (never done) They told me not to do the tranny service for a few months to make sure the fluid fixes my downshift issue first. Great shop.

We had a big discussion about how a sealed tranny could loose two whole quarts and all they can think of is that when Lexus replaced the radiator a few years ago (previous owner), they must have missed replacing the tranny fluid that was in the transmission cooler. The more incredible thing is that my truck has been driving fine for several years 2 quarts low on fluid with the only apparent symptom being a failure to find 1st gear when you floor it but only when it's cold...

It's a testament to Toyota design and good reason not to go to there for service ever again : / Especially after my throttle body incident last year which some of you guys saw in my videos.

Thanks for all the input and advice as always.

Praying the problem is as simple as that, like with my blown fuse!
