hi i am trying to get steared in the right direction. I have a 92 fj80 3fe 4.0 4WD and im having weird problems with my tranny, it first started with the reverse gear, it takes almost 3mins to kick into reverse, now all of a sudden it started with the forward gears, it revs to almost 3k rpm before kicking into third gear, once it gets into third it runs fine. If parked for more than a hour it starts all over again.
I was told by one mechanic that the transmission has to be rebuilt and by another that it may just be the solenoids because the problem goes away after passing third gear. I really need to have this resolved but which route should i take? The costly rebuild or solenoids. Any help would be great.

Do a search here for transmission and solenoids. The solenoid pack is a simple bolt in affair and available from Toyota. I tend to agree with the mechanic that mentioned it and if the tranny then needed a rebuild it would make sense to toss in the new solenoids anyhow. Requires the tranny pan be dropped, and you're staring right at the solenoids. Cdan here can help you with parts. If you know someone who's mechanically inclined this is not rocket science. Probably the most technical demanding part is properly cleaning the pan/tranny sealing surfaces and putting the proper sealant on properly before simply bolting it back in place.

You need to read my thread in the FAQ's. Read the tranny rebuild.

The 3FE engine is paired to the A440F tranny. That tranny only has one solenoid and it's for the cruise control. There is no other solenoid to control shifting.

My gut instinct tells me that your 3rd gear and reverse gear clutches are toast. This requires a rebuild.

Another thought that comes to mind is the kickdown cable might need adjustment. You can see if this helps your problem by adjusting it if you have the factory service manual to guide you.

Adjust the kickdown cable as previously advised. I am assuming you have checked fluid levels and condition of the fluid?...

Good call. Sometimes the obvious kicks you in the ass.
