OKay my four speed trans is completely giving out on me and i need a replacement. What are my options? i was looking at the compound 4spd trans at Spector and Man-a-fre, which seems like a good choice. or maybe just get a SM420 or SM465. Help please:)

I think you should rip out the whole drivetrain, put in a 3 cylinder geo motor and auto transmission.

a little more details are needed. Do you wheel it? Where do you wheel? what kind of terrain is it? do you want to keep your current engine. What is your budget?

I'm actually hoping keep the entire Toyota drive train. So far I'm running a Chevy 350 with aluminum heads, flap top pistons, and 270 cam. Of course the stock axles, with 456 gearing and a detroit in the back. People say that toy trans should be fine but others are telling to go automatic. but I'm lookin just to simply bolt on another one.

A 383, 465 and stock toy transfer with detroit in the rear is working very well for me. Lots of climbs & descents here in Hawaii (tallest moutains in the world). While crawling it's great to pick your gear & run with it.

sm465 = 6.7 to 1
sm420 = 7.2 to 1

Hey its good to see another Islander wheelin, but yeah those trannies you mentioned are definitely some of the choices i have thought about. Only thing that holds me back is that it requires some adapters and modifications, which may cost quite a bit of money right?

The Toyota tranny will be a bolt up and smoother shifting. That said, depending on your use, it's not real low, I'm recalling 5ish to 1. The 420 (7-1) and 465 (6.5-1) are truck trannys, and shift that way. The 465 is considerably more civilzed than the 420. I have both in 2 different 40s, I like the 465.

I'm running a Chevy Bell housing right now with an adapter plate to the toy trans, 11inch flywheel, and a centerforce clutch. I am also running a homemade bracket to retain the Toy clutch master/slave, so if i do plan putting the SM420 or SM465 trans, would i have to change any of this? However, I understand i will have to get an adapter for mating these trans to the TOY Tcase, as well addressing the cross-member issues or should I say adjustments.

my 420 shifts fine, I don't care for the rear t/case mount nor the price to buy a new 420/toy t/case adapter. If I hadn't routed a bunch a stuff already, I'd add mounts off the stock chevy bellhousing since my stock b/housing is made for mounts.

your slave cylinder clutch bracket should be an easy mod, elongate the mounting holes or just make a new bracket with a plate and a couple of mounting holes.

I ve done a few convertions in my time from v 6s in a craftsman mower to series 60 detroits in grapple yarders.Every single one of them would have been simpler ,cheeper and easier if I had gone with what came out.Its really up to you .That being said I went with the 465 I like it ,It shifts like a truck and thats just the way it is.
