I went to do a drain and refill on my tranny today and low and behold, the drain plug simply spins. It won't tighten and it won't loosen. I was the last person to do a fluid change, so I know it wasn't overtorqued. Does anyone know if the nut it screws into can come loose? Any ideas how to get it out? Do I need to pull the pan? BTW, it is a 1996.

Thanks

Cary

I don't think there was a nut it screws into, if i remember correctly the threads were on the pan.

I just inspected the old pan, there is a round reinforced area around the plug(possibly a round welded nut)...my 'nut' was not loose, the threads were stripped.

Crap, I better get a price for the pan. I was hoping that it was just he bolt.

well, heck, it'll cost ya $10 to have a nut welded on there...
or D&T for a bigger bolt
odd that it spins but doesn't leak, though
(not overtorqued eh? ;) )

I think the idea of pulling the pan and getting a new nut sounds the best. I am pretty careful about not overtorquing bolts, in fact I am the anal type that uses a torque wrench on nearly everything.
