Original owner of a 98, and when driving the transmission acts like its going to neutral when shifting to 3rd gear. High revs, no movement of vehicle. Acts just like its in neutral. Stopping and shifting to park corrects the problem for days or weeks. Is this considered slipping or something else?

Secondly, the vehicle is in excellent condition. New suspension a year ago, brakes redone. Engine is flawless. Interior is fantastic. It seems like its worth swapping or repairing the transmission and keeping the vehicle considering the condition.

If the transmission is rebuilt or swapped should I go ahead and replace the radiator/tranny cooler while I'm at it?

Anyone know of a reliable transmission shop near Columbia, SC?

I appreciate all input on this!

Check codes for a shift solenoid fault.
Or find a really really good trans shop that doesn’t go straight to replacing the trans as their only trans problem solution.

What mileage do you have? 4wd? My 99 4runner which I gave to my daughter when she joined U.S.A.F is currently around 370k I think it is original and never been overhauled or repaired I bought it around 235k with a blown HG.

At about 350K now. Just checked fluid level and it is low, so going to slowly add to correct, hot temperature line and go from there. It could be it's starving for fluid at times and not shifting. Everything else is smooth. When it's normally shifting, which it did after stopping the car and driving again later, it's smooth with no jerking or hard shifts. It's not what I'd call slipping.

I'm now trying to find what to use since Dexron II isn't really available anymore. I have a lot of T-IV for another vehicle, but people are recommending against using that. Type III seems hard to find too.

On a side note, the fluid was still nice and pink looking on the paper towel! It's just below the cold line when warmed up.

I was bad about maintenance for anything other than oil until lately. My LX570 has me reading, and reading about both vehicles now. I'm changing all fluids now and greasing drive shafts, etc......

I say drop the pan, if you find heavy metals or like coffee ground it's most likely done. It could also be sucking debris into the screen causing it to starve for fluid.

pink is not a good color for trans fluid, you want red. when coolant mixes into the trans fluid it will look like strawberry milkshake, is the fluid a milkshake kinda consistency or does it still look like trans fluid.

Pinkish on the papertowel to be more precise. It looks good. No sign of degradation or mixing. Radiator is fairly new and coolant is also good.
