Hi Fellas,

As I get closer to having the HJ61 where i want it, my thoughts turn to my boat trailer... and what to do with the lighting there. Seems like there are several options.

1. See if I can find existing 24V lights to swap with the 12V in the trailer. That might be hard, as the rear lights are sealed. Not sure yet if I can open them up, and re-seal them..

2.LED lights... expensive, but will work.

3. Inverter to turn the 24 into 12 at the trailer. Found one of these at http://www.redarc.com.au/tl.htm if you are interested.

So, do any of you tow a trailer? If so, what did you do for the trailer lights?

Cheers

Try Acklands...

Grote make a whole series of 24 volt trailer lights that are distributed by Acklands, among many others.

A number of times we've simply added a second single bulb light assembly to look after the signal, and then changed all the bulbs to 24V. One fellow drilled and installed a 3th bulb in the typical light housing that comes on trailers, and kept all 3 bulbs together.

Would be the cheapest and easiest way, also ensuring you can not loan out your boat/trailer :D

Of course you are dealing with sealed, so see if there is an identical sealed housing that has 24V bulbs. A local HD truck parts stores would be a place to start, if the Acklands lead does not turn out, then run another small light housing back to the same locations.

While you're at it, consider running your backup lights right to the back too...

in the garage i have a 24-12 convertor that converts the 24v signal, brake, running light system down to 12V for use on all trailers. it came from England and works like a darn.
i will try and dig it out tomorrow and post the part number and company that makes it.
cheers

The 24v Diesel Land Cruisers sold in Sweden and Germany have a germanmade Hella converter inside the drivers side rear quarter panel (HJ60)which is hooked up to the wiring system to provide 12v to the trailer lights. Towing equipment was standard at least in Sweden. On the BJ42 the converter is mounted just above the left tail light(on the inside).
