Sorry, guys, I haven't had much time lately! I did a SOA conversion on my M416 when I lived in AZ. At the time I was interested in having the trailer match the Cruiser's height (also SOA). Didn't affect the tracking at all, ran perfect and followed the Cruiser everywhere, highway and trail, dirt road and rocks, loaded or unloaded. The trial run for the SOA was driving the long way to Crown King (the backside? from BumbleBee? Sorry, it's been a while, my memory fades), the doing TR42 a week later.

Since then I've extended the tongue on mine, it's now MUCH easier to reverse, doesn't jacknife at the drop of a hat, and even at 90 degrees from the Cruiser, it doesn't touch the body (great for the trail).

Mine has a custom axle I got in Phoenix, same width and bolt pattern as the Cruiser. No hand brake, which is a bummer, but the matching bolt pattern was more important. It's been 5 years now, never really encountered a situation where I really miss the brakes.

Let's see some pics, folks! :)

Thanks Henry, it is good to see some real world experiance.

I have a bunch of questions for you, hope you don't mind. Do you remember where you got that axle?

Were brakes just not available, or did you just decide to pass on them? I have seen a bunch of trailer axles with brakes, but it seems like most were hydraulic or electric. You would think that cable actuated brakes would be easy enough to find, but I don't know if that is true if you need to go custom.

What size tires do you run on your trailer?

Does a longer tongue help with going forward--- highway and trail, or it just a reverse thing? The canadian trailers we have came with rotating pintles, that include a spring for shock abosrbing. I like the idea of getting a longer tongue, but I am not sure I want to give that up.

Now that I have asked you all these questions, I am thinking I remember asking you these things before. :) I should probably check the archives before I ask anymore.

Whatever dude! You know you're just upset that you've been outed. :flipoff2:

Henry,

When you movin back to Phoenix? You're always welcome you know.

Have you found out if you got the right bearings? I pulled mine and either it was already destroyed or I did it trying to get it out. The outside bearing says Romania on it while the inside is a Timken. Also the seal is now bad!

No and I'm pissed. Ordered the bearings and a trailer light kit on the 9th. The place didnt even ship them until the 12th. UPS shows they will arrive tomorrow. I'm not sure I will get to work on the trailer until some time next week. Both my original bearings were from Romania. I tried driving my seal out using the bearing but it didnt budge. I imagine most seals would need to be destroyed to remove them.

I beleive these are the correct part numbers below. You would need 1 of each to do a single side. The numbers should be pretty interchangeable with most any brand.

Outer
L44610 - race
L44649 - bearing

Inner
L68110 - race
L68149 - bearing

58846 - Seal

**I got the axle at a place called Arizona Trailer and Axle, it was somewhere south of GLendale, on the west side of 17th, close to the train tracks. I can try to dig up the receipt. I'm sure I have it somewhere...

**I SHOULD have gotten electric brakes, but at the time the budget was low.

What size tires do you run on your trailer?

** 35x12.5R15's, same as on the Land Cruiser. Mounted on 15x8" steel wagons.

** Yes. I think the trailer is more stable, less squirrely. You might be able to keep the rotating pintles, I kept mine by extending the A-frame.

** No biggie, man, it's not like I don't like to talk about it! :)

Cheers!!!!!

My brother is very upset about this. He has emailed her a couple of times with no response. He wanted it for this weekend for a scout camping trip. She does not reply to his emails. If she is waiting on something she should be able to reply, but nothing.

well even though i feel like im just talkin in thin air on this subject ill go ahead with my ignored input again,,cause im just that kind of guy ;)

arizona axle is at 59th south of bethany home rd. i think he is a bit on the spendy side well more than a bit, i think i would just order an axle from one of the 30 or so trailer shops in town, or if the axle has a standard spindle just get hubs. my axle ended up being 5 bolt (used axle) but for a measly $27 i have an adapter ring so i can use my trucks spare.

i am seriously suggesting you just reg your trailers as homebuilt, it was a VERY simple process for mine, im sure much easier than an import, especially if your having probs with paperwork.

and yes the rotating pintle can be kept, very easy. but not exactly the smartest thing as it will allow the trailer to roll over if that surcumstance arises. since some of you guys think you NEED total, massive, uninterupted movement for all the 5+ rated trails you'll be pulling your trailers down. :flipoff2:

p.s. my ball hitched non brake equiped trailer has been around the martinez loop and down the luge bypass, no problems. now im not suggesting you switch over to ball, just pointing out that a ball did fine, the standard non roating pintle SHOULD be good too

I've been behind you trailer, and yes it seems to do what you want it to do ;)

I still want to reg mine as what it is because of potential resale down the line if I choose to.

I actually don't like that big ugly round sloppy ring, but hey this is 05 bigger, mas, mucho is now in :flipoff2:

Agreed on the status thing. Many posts back on the Canadian trailer thread, you can see a photo ( Black trailer) I was buying what was advertized as a "Military trailer" on ebay. When it was checked out, the axle was swapped out and reg. as home made. That was a deal killer for me.

I've decided to sandblast my trailer. Anyone know of or can reccommend a local shop that does this type of thing?

Also, I can confirm the bearing and seal numbers I posted earlier are correct. Finished replacing the bearings today. Pretty easy. With the right tools it would take about an hour or two to do both sides.

I don't know any place that does sandblasting, but I do know that you can buy a sandblaster at harbor freight for less than 50 bucks. It might be worth it, although it could take a pretty long time.

I have just been using a wire brush wheel on an angle grinder so far.
