is there such trail, say 60+ miles that or somewhere around that range that we can wheel.. I guess im watching too much Alaskan off road.. but wouldn't it be cool to trail somewhere, then back the next day?? what do you think..

this also came to mind because when myself and my friends rode our bikes somewhere, not just riding around to ride, but actually have a distant destination..

sorry just thinking out loud..

Kar- Colorado offers exactly what you are looking for. Yeah I guess that doesn't help but I cut my teeth on toyotas and four wheeling in CO and there is nothing like offroading in Colorado. if anyone has any suggestions about such wheeling opportunities here in PA I'd ove to hear them, too! Gary

Kkaaar,

You read my mind!

I am working on just such a route through the Bald Eagle state forest. The trouble is that there is not much in the way of wheeling that a stock vehicle could not traverse.

Here is a write-up from someone who took some of the route I had in mind -

My family has a cabin near RB Winter State Park - around 1/2 hour west of Lewisburg. I know the area pretty well from riding ATV and exploring in trucks as a teenager.

I was thinking of making the pre-run a weekend affair.
I am not sure how many miles/hours a day is recommended for this sort of thing, but this is around 70 miles - mostly fire trails. Doing it in the winter would make it a little more challenging, and may make 70 miles a little too much.

I am thinking late February or early March would be best. I would like to limit the "pre run" to myself and 3 other trucks.

Next would be to plan something on the north side of 192 up toward Lock Haven and link the two together into a weekend long run. Could probably do 150 miles without more than 5 miles of paved road!

I live about 20 minutes from seven mountains campground (Boy Scout camp) and spent a lot of time hiking, camping and wheeling (exploring in those areas) please let me know if you need any help! I'll be happy to tag along. I can also get you quad maps if you need. There are a lot of neat places around there. Quite a few trails have no winter maintenance though and can become a sheet of ice from getting packed in. It's hit or miss sometimes. I'd be happy to help though.

Thanks Jody, you are welcome to join in the pre run. I will probably take my wife's stockish 80 series.

Have you ever found any good wheeling trails in Bald Eagle that are not gated?

There is one North of 80 that looks fun (and is not even on the map), but not really anything on the south side. From some of my experience near RB Winter I don't believe the forest service map shows everything that exists. Lots of gates though!

They have a really nice Topo map of the park -

I have also ordered the Purple Lizard map to see if there is anything on there that is not on the forest service map.

Here is a list of the gated roads and when they are open. Looks like many just closed for the season.

I'll take a look. There are a group of guys that wonder around up there on the weekends and know the area like the back of their hand. Their are quite a few decent goat trails. We have wondered onto a lot of gated trails ignorantly! Still house hollow is a fun one... Then you hit the gates. I ripped my exhaust off trying to find a way to it from the top one time.
Also. The Elke Creek Cafe (Milheim) is an awesome little place with good homemade craft beer, local food and great entertainment.
I can go out a few days in advance if you like and take a look at the conditions. I've traveled 100yrds off of 322 onto the siglerville pike and have been stuck on hard packed ice.

Wow that's great... Hopefully it doesn't interfere with my work schedule... Really diggin a nice trip..
