Take a cheap kick stand off a Huffy bike and mount it (upside down) to your roof rack. It's got enough spring to keep it upright, but will lay down if hit hard enough or you can lay it down yourself during close quarters.

On a large ride if several people only had handhelds, could you use two mobile units in two groups as repeaters to allow everyone to cover a larger area?

You could, but there are a few caveats to that.
1) HT's must be dual band, and capable of operating split. That is, transmitting on 70cm and receiving on 2m. (You can do full duplex cross band, but it's tough to do within FCC regs, and the duty cycle is very, very high)
2) Whoever is running the cross band repeater will functionally need a second radio in their rig. You can either use a radio in normal tx/rx, or cross band repeat, not both simultaneously.
3) Duty cycle must be monitored, or have some sort of auxiliary cooing fan / system on the repeater radio. The duty cycle they're rated for isn't going to scale to a group of folks using it. To your point, if only a couple folks used it to hit the rest of the group at a distance, there probably wouldn't be an issue here.

The ideal use of cross band repeat is to support a couple of folks using HT's while they're away from their truck.

What I've not seen in mobile 2m or dual band antennas is really anything that has a spring base mount, that could take a reasonable hit by a tree limb or whatever else. I think firestick makes a fiberglass antenna but I'm not sure how well that works.. I was using a comet brand that's roughly 3 feet tall and has a fixed mount.

I will be looking for something like a simple 90 degree fixed mount but it would be great if there were any nmo mounts with a spring base? if anyone knows. When you get into the trees and stuff the antenna's and mounts take a beating.

Take a look at the Larsen NMO 2/70SH. I've got one on the truck, and I've not run it into a ton of stuff, but it's taken a few pretty good whacks without issue.

The other option is running a 5/8 wave, such as the Larsen NMO150B, and putting it up on a bull bar type bumper. The whip is 47" roughly, and it's really flimsy, but it's spring steel so it's hard to deform permanently. I run one of those for CB (NMO27B). If you actually manage to trash the whip on something, they're about $12 to replace.

Yeah... We both took the Tech test on Sunday...
There was a 14yr old kid who passed having only studied one night so It should be that hard for anyone who wants to try it.

I highly encourage every one to get some form (other than cell phones) of communication for future group trail rides.
Last run we had part of the group get separated and by the time the phones were working they were miles away and had to find their own way to the camp area. Also Kieth and Hal were meeting us later in the day and passed the camp area before they were able to get in touch with us via cell phone.

I would really like to see every one try to get their Tech license. It only cost $15 and the radios can be gotten very cheaply.
It would also be nice to have if we ever want to volunteer for disaster assistance (something that I am very interested in).
Not to mention the ability to communicate with out power or cell phones seems to be a dying art and is something that would be very important if we ever loose large portions of the power grid.

Sweet! Couple more folks with 2M rigs.

I'm 100% with you on doing some EMA / disaster stuff. I think it'd be a really great thing to do as a club.

If you get a rig in the truck soon, Hal and I have unofficially declared 146.460 as the DLC club freq. Totally stole the idea from RS4x4 from CO, but it works since it's simplex and not the .520 calling freq. Obviously repeaters work, but simplex is kinda fun I think.

cool!
My Dad gave me a yaesu ft1500m that I don't think has ever been hooked up.
I'm trying to figure out which antenna I want to go with and how to mount it (on the 80).
I have all but decided to go with the Comet Sbb-5 antenna and mount it on the bumper where my cb is currently mounted.

I have a lip mount that I'm going to put on the hatch of the 100. I want to for now get the power run in both trucks with a plug near where the radio will be so I can move the radio back and forth easier. Not sure how that will work with the radio mount but I hope I can find two brackets that are easy to slide the radio on and off of.
I will probably soon be getting another radio so this would only be temporary.

Kieth, where did you say to get the cable?

looks like someone might be coming after my tinfoil hat. :flipoff2:

and there's only a 10% chance of that

When you figure out wiring it in two trucks I may just copy your set up. Necessity and convenience are favoring the rodeo for most of our trips. If I get a trailer to put the tent on I might actually be looking at a situation where I could possibly be considering selling the 80.

That wasn't an easy thing to type.

I am a while off before I come to that decision. I still have hundreds of lbs of parts sitting around waiting to be installed.

I have been watching the classifieds to see what a locked front end is worth. Other than that I think I'll go ahead with everything else I have planned....front seats, swapping the rear axle once I get the LCAs I need to get with clank on my ironman bushings. Wiring the roof rack lights and reworking all my accessories to power off a aux fuse box. If I can't tighten up my steering by adjusting my ps box like clank told me about maybe new TREs. Still want a snorkel 315s and a rear bumper. I 1/2 way started a dual battery set up... Now I want a ham... The list goes on and on. I need toget on at TPD so I can get some of that drug money.

I second that entirely. Larsen is the way to go. Put a half wave on Hal's bumper and it tuned up <1.5 SWR across the band. It isn't "optimal" there but it works pretty damn well.

I ran Larsen stuff on my Tacoma and will probably go the same way with the cruiser.

Site for cable is dxengineering.com. Check your cable again with the antenna disconnected and make sure the mount isn't shorted. We didn't check for that.
