For $25, this site all but takes the test for you. I passed Tech, General, and Extra using it to study.

It makes it like a game, where if you miss a question it re-shuffles it back in the deck 10-15 questions later, but as you get them correct they're removed from the deck. For tech, I guarantee if you do this 30 min a night, you'll pass in under 2 weeks, probably a week. It's easy.

Handheld is certainly the no-excuses cheapest way to get into it with that Baofeng at $40. Even better now that Matt has one and knows how to program it.

Once you get into it you'll want the output power and more optimal antenna options of a mobile rig. That's where it really gets into maximum benefit over CB.

As Matt said though, the HT's will still work loads better than CB. Mobile rigs are another order of magnitude better.

Hal and I talked simplex from the summit to Inverness on the way home on 146.460 on 10w, no issues. With 50w on tap, the distance gets lots better. I can hit Tuscaloosa's repeater from my house with 50w with no problem at all.

After a year of postponing and re-scheduling i am finally taking the test this thrusday night. Hopfully next time we are wheeling i can do more than ease drop on you guys. wish me luck!

yaseu makes a good basic 2m handheld...but as noted the best solution is a regular mobile radio mounted in the vehicle...50-75 watts on high power for some of the 2m radios.

The clarity and range of the 2m ham will amaze you...and its really not crazy expensive. I don't know a lot about ham stuff...basically I just have one in the LC for off-road when I'm not breaking antennas.

Those things are bomb proof. Submersible, shock proof, vibration proof, etc. You can pick them up used from time to time for around $100-110 shipped.

35 shipped now.

With the price that low I will probably pick up another spare and there is really no excuse, costwise, for anyone not to get into 2m for the trail.

Man, that's an absolute steal.

I was actually thinking of this thread last night while I started figuring out how I was going to mount my 2M and CB in the gold truck.

The campout last Feb was a lot of fun. I think we need to make that our annual thing that we plan well in advance so everyone can (ideally) schedule around it and make it. Maybe make it a 2 night deal Fri and Sat, or do MLK weekend around a holiday.

Figured that'd be a good goal for folks that are on the fence about getting their ticket to have most of the club going on 2M radio by then.

That's the one Matt uses; It is a good deal.
I think there is a thread on mud about them.
