I am finally finished getting the new axles under my 40 after having to watch her sit there crippled for about 3 months until I got the money:frown: I learned my lesson after a pinion incident and need a traction bar now. I am stuck between fabbing up my own or purchasing something along the lines of this: http://www.deckersonline.com/services51832.html ; the kit from RuffStuff ; or any other recommended setups.
For fabbing up my own does anyone have any good schematics or diagrams that have been trail tested and can be vouched for? And the last thing, should I go ahead and box the frame while i was down there putting in a traction bar?

As always, thanks for the help.

This might not apply but here's what I did. I actually have the lower leg of my tractionbar following almost exactly the angle of the driveshaft. It mounts directly in a lateral line with the t-case output. I figure that way atleast the d-shaft and bar won't be fighting each other. The greater the vertical spread at the axle end, the greater the anti-rotational force applied against it.

If I had the stock t-case in the truck I would try to run the crossmember above the output. That way a shackle could hang down and inline with the output. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the trac-bar shackles and the leaf spring shackles are also the same length. I have heard mounting the tracbar with the shackle up makes the truck climb better due to instant center being different. Also use a uni-ball, johnny-joint, or something like it at the front of the trac bar to allow rotation as the axle flexes.

Thats all I have for now.

P.S. brace the piss out of it at the axle side.

Thank you Poser, you truly do make my life easier.

His claim is that on FJ stamped housings, axle wrap bars that don't have enough surface area can and do rip off the housing... sometimes taking parts of the housing with it:eek:

Don is stating facts. I have seen many Land Cruiser and mini truck housings tore apart because of a poor design anchoring the anti-wrap bar to the axle...
