who here has matched track widths? Why or why not? How did you do it?

I don't like how squirmy the rear is in snow, I'd imagine it's similar in sand. Considering quality wheel spacers. Thoughts?

Yes, my understanding is also that this issue only plagues newer trucks with widened front end.

It's very common to have a slightly smaller track width in the rear.

My track width is about 60mm narrower out back if my measurements were correct.

The newer 7x trucks have a 100mm narrower rear axle. I expect ~60mm is common across all make and model of 4x4. I know my old Grand Wagoneer had a 2.5" narrower rear vs front.

Interesting. I didn't realize the newer ones had that much difference!? 4" is a lot. I notice extra play out back in snow. I can't imagine what people feel in the new trucks.

I have the GRJ76 and so I have this problem. I think there are only 3 4 solutions.

  1. Spacers

    PRO: low cost; easy installation
CON: Illegal in some jurisdictions; can be very dangerous if not installed properly or if using poor quality spacers; failure of installation can be catastrophic to the wheel/axle if wheel separates from axle at speed

  2. -50 offset wheels

    PRO: much safer than spacers
CON: have to carry 2 sets of spares or run a spacer if your spare is 0 offset and your -50 tire/wheel is damaged; options for -50 offset rims in 16x8 or 16x10 are fairly limited (I can't find any in Japan; in OZ, King Wheels is the best option- Ronny Dahl is running -50s on his VDJ79)

  3. MDT TruTracker

PRO: real solution to the track problem, compliant with Australian Design Rules (ADRs)
CON: $3500 AUD; permanent change to the differential; installation in Australia or else you're on your own with YT videos

  4. Ultimate Dana 60™ rear axle kit for LandCruiser 70

PRO: new axle! and it's a Dana 60!
    CON: expensive! ($10K AUD?)
I haven't decided yet what I want to do. Long-term I'd love to import a TruTracker set and have it installed in Japan but that's a fairly large expense and effort. Finding or importing -50 offset wheels is a similar effort, if maybe cheaper. Those in Japan who care are using spacers but I won't run spacers that large.

Did you check the rim offset? You may have 2 types of rims.

Also in Aus is a complete Dana axle with the correct width to match the front.

The TruTracker is pretty cool. A plus is in the future if you have a worn spindle you can replace it instead of replacing the entire axle housing.

75 series is same track width you must have odd rims

Good point- I forgot about the OZ Dana. I edited my post. $10K AUD for the Dana- that makes the TruTracker look cheap in comparison...
