I had an ad from ToyotaPartsDeals in my inbox this week and decided to check the pricing for new lift hatch struts for my wife's 2016 200, which have been slowly failing. Pricing seemed high, so I went to check around for validation, and came across this discrepancy, which I thought you'd find interesting. Needless to say, you know which ones I ordered!

I wont comment on my general thoughts on Toyota's parts pricing, but good find. I feel like my door is pretty slow to lift on my 2018.

Im talking about how much Toyota charges for parts in general. not a specific website's pricing.

Toyota actually doesn't charge anything except the cost of the part that they sell to the authorized dealers.

Toyota corporate has an MSRP that is provided to dealers.

Dealers can charge whatever the market will bear for pricing. It's always been this way.

Both websites listed are not Toyota dealership. The websites are considered gray market. So no Toyota part warranty. @OGBeno would know a lot better than me.

Im not sure what you are arguing or trying to explain. Whatever the MSRP toyota sells to the dealers can still be ridiculous.

My point is, a lot of the parts I have looked at for Toyota's specifically are ridiculously expensive compared to other brands. Take the nav unit for my GX460 that had the screen crap out on me. I went to go ask the dealer what it costs to replace the screen. You can't just replace the screen, you have to replace the entire unit and it costs $10,000. No that is not a typo. I went and checked websites to verify the price and was getting $9-11k for the unit.

$10k for what was an incredibly crappy nav system!

Turbos for the new V35A motor in the Tundra/LX600/GX550? Like $3000 a piece. Turbos for a 3.5L F150 Ecoboost, $1200 for the pair.

What I’m explaining is the following:

The price you see when you buy a Toyota part is determined by the people you buy them from; not Toyota Corporate North America or Toyota Motor Corporation Japan— IE: not the big “Toyota” you are thinking of, as in the brand or emblem or corporation.

Parts manager and dealerships determine the price of Toyota and Lexus parts to their end consumers: in this case, you.

Toyota (“big” Toyota) doesn’t control at what price their dealerships sell their trinkets at…

Kind of. That's like saying the corner gas station is responsible for the price of gas, after all they're the one choosing the markup.

Just like Toyota parts dealers, they can choose to sell it for less than the cost as well. It's the sellers' choice at what price they want to sell anything at. Car parts or fuel at a gas station. The manufacturer doesn't care as long as it's getting paid what it wants. :meh:
