I have an 1984 Toyota 4x4 Pickup, my problem is , i can drive down the road and it will just shut off. When i pull the coil wire off I'm not getting any spark, after i let it sit for about 10 Minutes it will chank back up and run, this is starting to get crazy. I have replced the coil and ignitor that the coil set on, the distributor and rotor button. If anyone please has any advice that will help me fix this please let me know swjumper125000@hotmail.com, thanks

I heard somewhere that the 84s had a leetle computer somewhere that sometimes took a crap to the tune of 4 hundred bucks......but thats just what I heard...

Good luck,
Dan

Clean All The Groung Wires You Can Find. Will Only Take A Few Hours. Dirt And Oil Stop Electrical Current.

Does it bog down prior to quitting or just stop?

when it die it just cut off, but it does it when the vehicle runs for about ten minutes

You want to test spark at the plug wire with either a tool or by the old put it next to the block method.

See what that does. Coils are typically not intermittant.

So, you did the test I mentioned as well i.e. you know for sure you have no spark after 10 mins?

instal an inline sparktester, see what happens when it dies.
possibly thr "points" are f'd up. a different distributor will solve it.

notice the ""
it uses a 5v square wave hall effects sender to tell ignitor when to fire the coil.

Yeah, I think pin is on to something. If it has electrically changed, then heat must be a factor or time and that is causing a change in one of the components. I am not real sure about the exact components in your system but there are many that need to be tested if it still a point system.

yeah, it's kinda critical to use oem all the way through the ign. system. I thought I was cheating the system once and bought an msd box. well only after purchase and some shop time around found nobody willing to do the swap, so as a little luck would have, my yoda parts guy here gave me some serious discount on these big ticket items.
It sounds like some heat factor type breakdown of some one as of yet undiagnosed parts. post what you find out.

MSD swap can be done.
I have only removed them.
Never installed.

I know they are worthless on a stock truck.

I also know that its essential on a highly modified truck.
i.e. 22RE dual turbo, stage II cam, methanol injected, 9lbs boost total of 13lbs.

that was the fastest 22RE ever, but short lived.

Like i said, i have removed the MSD ignitions from these trucks.:D

It also sounds like a vapor lock problem that I had on my 81. when the tank was full. It would shut off about 5 miles after a fill up, and I could watch the fuel running into the in line filter, let her sit for about ten minutes and it would be fine the rest of the tank.....
FWIW,
Dan

According to this the dist was new? Is that accurate? If so, you are saying you had a failed, new distributor?

Thanks

I had a similar problem with a mazda i had. After a lot of agony i traced it down to the ignition mudule, a little piece of wonderful electronic gadgetry contained in the distributor housing. a trip to the junk yard and no more quiting. Your distributor most likely has one as well.
