Cary-I think part of the confusion is that many oil brands have dropped the DexIII configuration. For instance, Chevron now markets MD3, which appears to be the old DexIII. Works fine in the 80 and in all cruiser Power Steering applications.

What IS now clear, is that reading the fine print on ATF bottles is very important, at least with older trucks.

Having worked for Toyotas US Headquarters, and having been GM's Worldwide Powertrain Planner I can say that people who are called 'techs' and answer 800 telephone calls from consumers are really just interns and temps reading stuff off their computer screens. This person looked at the LandCruiser from that year, dragged their finger across the screen and read Dex III is the current recommendation.

I've had Dex IV in my 80 series trannies for a long time and I tow more weight more miles than anyone on this list.

This is a very strange thread - anyone else feel it?

Oh yeah, I feel it alright - Right upside the head since post #4 which unfortunately Kwikrnu has edited making his/her response seem benign now. Should have quoted it but oh well

What's that old saying...You can lead a horse to water but...

On the plus side this thread caused the old manual and FSM data to be added to the FAQs and is becoming a great :popcorn:read :D

What did I remove from post #4? I added my search history /copy of screen.

Jeff in fairness, thats all his edit did.

I did not have this data in the FAQ and now it is. This has been benifitial in that respect.

I wouldn't believe somebody on a 1-800 line for a confirmed tech answer. Those people read from a script rather than basing their answer off of knowledge and experiance.

I must have recalled wrong what his comments were in his first reply - I seem to have confused this and a similar "help" thread.

My apologies, Kwikrnu, for accusing you of something you obviously didn't do.
