Going on the pictures, this part looks like what I call a 'cutter nut' ie. one that makes it's own thread on an otherwise blank stud and has an integral washer?

Just asking as I have one of the exhaust heatshields on my 80 that I'd like to replace, and the above part is what Toyodiy says is used to hold basically all the heatshield plates on.

I believe the thread is segmented, and distorted so it holds tension on the studs. A self locking nut.

I may be wrong about this particular one, but there's various nuts with distorted threads, and distorted shape that act as locking nuts.

Makes sense for a heat shield where a nylock nut would be destroyed by heat

I presume then that removing said nuts doesn't ruin the studs they go onto?

I don't know about the diesels, but the gasoline 1FZ-FE engines use self locking nuts on the exhaust header studs and both have to be replaced when removed. The heat shields are secured with 6-mm bolts.
