I personally think its sad....not so much from a car stand point, but really the only ones making money on this is the dealership. Look at the pricing compared to a few months ago...willing to bet the average pricing increased somewhere around 4500.00 hmmm...wonder who really is making out on these "deals"? I was looking at some ford adds...the same trucks they were listing 8 to 9k off a few months back, now they are listing as "we are matching the government 4500.00 for your clunker" Yupp, big savings there huh? Keep your Jeep, as they are really getting nothing for it.... if we all toss in 25 bucks maybe we can crush it at the FG? good entertainment :)

Isn't that the idea though? The bill has rules that state that the only vehicles eligible to be purchased through this program are ones assembled here in the USA. It's supposed to stimulate the OEM's, primarily to keep the Govt. Motors ( GM ) and Chrysler afloat as they come out of chapter 11.

I hope this is over soon. I personally feel that I've subsidized enough car purchases already.

If it weren't for my parents making out on the deal I would personally feel the same way. :meh:

On a side not my parents were getting the Camry for invoice, then getting the $4500 off that.

They have a new one coming from the registry. Looks like we won't find out until Monday if they are extending it or not.

I guess my intent was to show that you and I as buyers do not benefit from this at all. The way the bill was to work was for people to still get a 4500 break on their purchase above and beyond what the dealer is able to do, instead the dealer has just increased the price 4500 and reaps all the benefit. I've seen the adds and it just doesn't add up in favor of anyone but the dealer. Just my 2 cents and I totally agree with Rick.

I haven't seen that at all, I've been monitoring the various car forums and people are stacking the factory rebates on top of the 4500 CARS money with lots of folks buying brand new cars for 4 digits. In fact, there was much ado about the Gov't warning the dealers that doing what you are suggesting would result in them loosing their "right" to offer the program.

Also, there is NO stipulation that the vehicles being turned in or bought be domestics. The Car Lounge Forums: Cars traded under cash for clunkers The only stipulations are related to MPG.

I thought the whole reason people weren't buying cars is they couldn't afford them in the first place. The unemployment rate is sky high! How do people expect to pay for these new cars? Are we headed for a lot of foreclosures?

Looks like this guy is trying to get more than $4500 for his 93 FJ80 with 280k here on Mud otherwise he is turning it in. He is over in Maine. Its sad that it will get crushed but I wouldn't pay that for an 80 with that high a mileage. Sad that this will probably eat up some of what were be coming cheap 80's when people can get more for crushing them.

getting 4500 is a good deal for that truck even if it has lockers. A much bigger issue with the 80s is that they are so much cheaper here in the states that they are being bought and shipped elsewhere.

Either way they aren't sticking around for future cheap purchases.

Thats too bad since cheap 80's are great for young/new drivers to get into the sport without having to drive a Heep.

A large portion of the early Tacomas have already been removed and the more of the earlier mini trucks are rusting out.

Depends on when the program runs out of money. It was expected that it would be some time in the fall. Turns out the money ran out in one week now they are trying to get another $2 Billion to fund it.

If someone can take advantage of this, then they would be foolish not to. Hope your parents make off like bandits :D

I'd bet that the first billion went primarily to people who were already in the market for a new car and it was just the thing to make them move a little faster.

This next 2 billion will probably be going toward luring people into making a purchase that they had not previously thought about.

So this second round will probably last longer and produce more repo's.

I'm still having a hard time understanding the need to trash the engines.

YouTube is now getting flooded with videos of techs ruining the engines, it's really sad. Kinda like watching someone have their pet dog put down. What a waste.
