Hi Mudders!

I own a 2008 4Runner, and am looking to move to a 200 Series LC.

I've been researching one in particular, and pulled the service records from Toyota.com. Pretty useful, and provided me some good insights (for example, first owner was fastidious in doing service whereas the second owner was less so).

I'm having trouble understanding some of the codes that are used in the records. Can anyone help me decipher them?

"minor service SUV": I'm assuming this is an oil change
"minor svc p/c": Also looks like an oil change
"intermediate ser p/c": Not sure about this one. Doesn't seem like an oil change unless the owner was doing them VERY frequently.
"brake section1": Any ideas?
"trim section1": Any ideas?
"trim section2": Any ideas?
"lof 8 cyl": Any ideas?
"body trim": Any ideas?

The only thing that's a bit concerning is the lack of documented oil changes from about 75k to 103k miles (the current mileage is 140k miles, and oil changes are documented from 103k to current). It's possible the prior owner who had it during this period did oil changes himself or at a non-Toyota location. If it were you, how would you feel about this?

Thanks!

Charley

I don't know about the codes, but having once upon a time been a certified mechanic, I do my own oil changes and routine maintenance. So, on my 100 series you won't find an online record of a timing belt change, water pump change, brake system rebuild, etc. On the 2017 LC I traded in you wouldn't find a record of the 30k mile service either. I even did a home garage swap of an engine in a Lexus ES300 (one of the sludge monster engines). None of this got entered into the online system.

Alternately, maintenance service can be fully documented but the vehicle was "driven hard and put away wet".

I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't select, or reject, a vehicle based on the online record as it may not tell the whole story.

"lof 8 cyl": Any ideas?

My take is this one is "LOF 8 cylinder" which would mean Lube, Oil and Filter for an 8 cylinder - in other words, an oil and filter change.

What does the Carfax or Autocheck have for service or accident records? Toyota is only going to have service done at a dealer, but the other sites can have other service info. I can't figure out what the 3 "trim" services would be. If there is a dealer listed for those, call their service dept and ask what those mean.

Many independent shops don't report into either the Toyota system (if it's not a dealer) or into Carfax. A lack of online service records may very well indicate they used an independent shop for maintenance.

"brake section 1" probably indicates new front brakes. Just a hunch.

"trim" might indicate something loose, rattling, etc. Really hard to tell.

Seems like that dealer wasn't very good about entering the service history. My local dealer puts in tremendous detail when they enter things; alternately the local repair shop I use doesn't record anything.

You probably wouldn't want either my 100 or my 200 based on their CarFax or Toyota service history. Neither list brake replacements or fluid changes done by repair shops in backwoods Guatemala or El Salvador.
