Hey guys,

Today I learned there is a 4B diesel engine! Have you ever heard of them before? I knew of 14b's but never 4b, I would assume it is a NA indirect injection. I personally have not seen them but found out the Dynas (BU 306)from 1999 to 2004 had them!

Just following this, I would imagine this is what we would understand as equivalent to a 4BII in terms of a rotary pump, and non sleeved pistons, would that be so?

Anybody seen or heard about them?

Wow! Everyday is a new learning experience!!

A 4B with direct injection is a 14B. Toyota adds the '1' prefix to a motor's name when it is direct injected instead of indirect. They may also add a little extra cubic capacity in some instances.

Other examples include:

2H --> add direct injection and turbo --> 12H-T
3B --> add direct injection --> 13B --> add turbo --> 13B-T

etc.

The B series is essentially B-2B-3B-4B-5B, with direct injected variants/developments from 3B onwards. I've long wondered if the H series ended at 2H/12H-T or whether there were subsequent versions (3H, 4H...etc?) used in Hino trucks.

This may or may not be overly pedantic, but using the 13B-T as an example, "add direct injection" actually means a whole host of changes. Obviously head is different, as well as the DI pistons, and the gudgeon pins and connecting rods are bigger. I think there is also some discussion on wether 13B-Ts are sleeved or not - don't remember. When someone posted that youtube link of "Roothy" tearing one down he remarked that its a whole different (and in his opinion, much better) engine. Just grist for the mill.

There was a book about expedition travel in Africa and it had a run down on various vehicles giving the pros and cons to each one
The author claimed that the 1HZ was a redesigned 2H and not much better:rolleyes:
Ive looked long and hard and I cant see any similarities except the they are both 4.2 litres and 6 cyl

Isn't that the point of a redesign, to make improvements? If you were going to keep the engine the same they wouldn't have changed the model code.
I thought the 2H was a 4.0 litre so I presume there's a little sarcasm with your similarities.

According to my FSM the block and crankshaft of the 3B and 13B are the same. Almost everything else is different although some of the differences are so minor as probably to not matter much while others are significant, especially the pistons and connecting rods as already mentioned, and the head.

Also, according to my FSM, the 13B-T is sleeved the same as the 3B.

Nope.
Having H in the model code and running on diesel is as close as they get.
4HE1-T engine

Thanks. Well, there may be no connection to the Toyota H series engines, but that Isuzu 4HE1-T looks pretty sweet. Imagine a 4-cylinder displacing 4.7 liters, and producing 400Nm of torque!!:steer:

I don't suppose there's room for that in a 40's engine bay? :hmm:

Heaps of length in the 40 engine bay, you'll probably need bigger bump stops to keep the axle away from the sump.
There are several 40's running around here with the Isuzu 4BD1T in them. Mine puts out around 520Nm.
It's fun, hard on tyres though.:steer:

Not to be a nit picker but the 2H/12H-T is 4 Liter (3980cc)
But ya.. both 6 cylinders... I think the guy is onto something :rolleyes:
or more like ON something

Doh,Im thinking of the 2F:rolleyes:

Kind of sad as the book is some kind of Bible for overlanding.
I heard he later ditched Lrover and come over to the sunny side if its the same author:D
