Hi Crew-

Im wondering if anyone here has towed their 73 with a 5th gen 4runner -

I know the 4runner is not best in tow but maybe with a Tow bar for flat towing in True Neutral - I don’t have to carry the weight of the trailer

Thinking about options so I don’t have to do the 18 hour drive up from south florida to any mountain :)

any feedback or experience is appreciated.

In Europe that same question would be "can I use my 73 to tow my 4runner around long distance " ;-)

All kidding aside in 2014 I looked in to buying a new 4Runner for the misses and the 2 biggest reasons we actually bought a jeep grand cherokee instead of the 4 runner are

Towing capacity 4700lb vs 7500lb
gas mileage 16mpg vs 28mpg

And a 165k miles later I have not regretted that decision as I have towed here with a third gen 3.4 4Runner,FZJ80,UZJ100 and a 5.7 Tundra and besides the 5.7 all these gassers where struggling

I will say it's going to suck. I have a 2006 double cab tundra V8, and towing my BJ74 when we moved with a light car hauler, you could tell it was back there. My BJ74 weighs 4600lbs.

With a 4runner, you are basically already at max tow capacity, not to mention the more important issues if you flat tow, you don't have any trailer brakes. If for some reason that HZJ73 gets to moving, it's going to throw that 4 runner all over the place.

Get some comfy seats in the Cruiser and enjoy the countryside.

Hey @Bulimba

X2 for what @joekatana and @FJBen have said. The 4runner just does not have the capacity to do the job well and safely. You would be flogging it, and the fact that the Land Cruiser likely outweighs the 4runner, it would be a white knuckle drive. I personally just wouldn't tow a cruiser without a trailer either. You need the brake assist. Unless, of course you are towing with something that is 3x the weight of the Cruiser.

Put a little more time and effort into making your beautiful 73 a little more comfy, or plan to take more rest stops to stretch the legs and back and enjoy the cruise! :steer:

Good God, Man! That Land Cruiser is made for driving 18 hrs. You want to tow it??
:bang: :flush: I’ll do that in the first two days of my Sept trip. It will last 4 weeks.
