An FJ what? There are only about umpteen million different models starting with "FJ"

Mark...

Hi, have you searched the forums yet?

U-haul recommends that load w/trailer should not exceed 80% of the tow rig. Aside from wheel base issue or dog wagging (assuming 40; the only "fj" that can hang alone i.m.h.o.) you should be all set to tow your jeep around.

Welcome to mud. :flipoff2:

Sarcasm abounds.

Lets assume a mid to late 70's FJ 40? What could they tow? I know there are a few variables but just rough estimates is all I was wondering.

3K is the spec for an FJ 40. No way would I tow that much anywhere but around the block. Old brakes and a short wheelbase are a bad combination. 80% is about right for a modern vehicle. 1K is probably safe for a 40.

towed a 21' boat behind a '79 40 for about 7 miles. no highway...45mph max. trailer had brakes. talk about the tail waggin the dog! scared the living s*** out of me. and it's not the going thats the problem, its the stopping(i had discs) and the keeping it straight thats the problem. later on, put it behind a '95 suburban...had to keep looking in the mirror to see if it was still there....couldnt even feel it. yes, you can tow with it, i wouldnt unless what ur towing is small and light.

What is the towing capacity of a FJ? Assume V8 and disk brakes?

Thanks

PO of my own rig towed something heavy, or fixed, with the 40 I have now, the V8 was too torquey, bent the rear crossmember very badly, so If you have an older rig, be careful, because that rear member gets very thin in its old age, and will warp. My $0.02.

I pulled a small sailboat (14' Hobie cat) with my 40 ('77, front discs with 2F) and it did okay. Boat and trailer weighed about 500 lbs. total though. Much more than that wouldn't be much fun. Short wheelbase kills you because the front end unloads so easily, making steering kinda squirrely.

If your going hunting and want a utility trailer thats about it.Anything bigger is to dangerous for you and everybody else on the road.took a little 6 foot truck box trailer 600 miles to the Kootneys felt like I had driven for a week.

What about towing a small camper with a good electric brake system? I haven't don't much towing. None at all in a 40. Mine is going to have 4 wheel disk brakes and I was really thinking of getting one of those tiny travel campers. Been looking at the 13' Casita deluxe which I am guessing would be only 2000 lbs with all the tanks full. It comes with electric brakes on it. What do you think?

I have an electric brake controller on my 40 with a 406 sbc and it pulls fine. I do have the MAF 1045 hd bumper on the 40. With the progressive Prodigy brake controller pulling is a breeze. I also have skyjacker 4in lift springs on the 40 so the springs are heaver than stock. I can pull my M101 loaded down or my loaded 5x9 utility trailer fine. I have the brake controller set for stout braking on the trailer because as the before mentioned short wheel base of the 40. I origionally installed the brake controller in my Z71 but got the accessories to be able to swap it between both vehicles. Without a electric brakes I concur with everyone else on light weight towing.
