I'm trying to decide whether to keep my 1998 FJ100. After looking around at other options, I've not been impressed with what I can get for the money I'm willing to spend. I'm getting a travel trailer and I wanted to be able to pull more than what the 100 can pull. So, here's the question. What can it pull, really.

It is rated at 6,500 lbs. Has anyone ever pulled this much? And, how does pull? Will it continually be shifting back and forth between 2nd and 3rd on an incline?

hi,
I am towing a 6,000# -6,500# travel trailer with stock 01. I use the Hensley-Arrow hitch because the trailer is 26' long and the 100 WB is 112" -- too short for trailer length regardless of #. (112' WB= 22' trailer is the standard formula for safe towing.) With the HA, I have no sway issues, (A $3,000. solution) Your question is power related -- From my experience, I can travel north and south on the east coast and east and west in the easy hills but I'm way under powered for real mountains (Rockies). Slee's Turbo will fix the power problem, but the trailer length must also be addressed for safety's sake. If I had it to do over, I'd get a 22' trailer @ 4000# and drive anywhere in my trusty 100.

My 1999 tows a 4500lb boat/motor/trailer very well on the highway as well as around town. I think the 100 could tow 6500 around town fine, the highway might be a different story.

I tow a 21' AeroLite trailer with a GVW of 4000 lbs and think the 100 does great over 8,000' passes of the Sierra Nevada. You just have to know you're not driving a Cummins powered 1 ton. But when I unhook the trailer, I can park it in a parking lot a lot easier than a full size truck.

I tow a 6,000 lb (loaded) 25' Jay Feather, with a Reese High Performance WD hitch. I considered getting the sway control add-on, but it really has not been necessary. The 100 really tows that beast fine, but you are not going to win any drag races. I also added air bags to the rear suspension to offset the torque of the hitch, but one of the air tubes keeps pulling out in regular driving, doing little more than pissing me off.

Going through the Appalachians takes patience, as the 100 doesn't like to climb with that weight in tow. Downhill is another story altogether. Put it in third and it will hold itself firmly at 50mph without brakes. On more level coastal terrain, I find that it tows fine in O/D with occassional switching off for rolling terrain. Plan on many stops for fuel (less than 10mpg).

Does it tow as well as a diesel - no - but it is certainly doable. Any bigger trailer would require a bigger truck. My next thought would be a 5th wheel or an RV with a trailer for the cruiser.

edscruisin,

Is you trailer 6,000 or is that the total weight of the trailer and the hitch/baggage/water/etc. I'm looking to purchase a trailer at 5,700-5,900 lbs.

I just looked it up and it is rated at 5,000 GVWR (loaded), but I carry a full load of bikes, fire wood, and to much crap in general :)princess:)

I would find something to tow and go tow it. Mine is rated for 7500 and I tow a 5500lb boat. Yes, it can pull it, but I have been in situations where it just struggles- like starting from a stop on a hill and trying to get up to speed. I usually have to let off the gas and then hammer it and I'm sure that isn't good for the transmission. Do you carry passengers and a load in the truck??? It will make a difference as well(I also have AHC which doesn't like the cargo weight). You will have issues with being able to see the trailer unless your lifted. The mirrors suck and your line of site on the trailer wheels is usually compromised. Don't mean to scare you, but towing for me is a safety issue and I don't feel safe towing with the 100. IMHO....

Oh, It towed my 2500lb boat with no power issues or AHC issues.
