2H, H55F, 31's is my current setup. We'll be hauling our horses a little more this year and since I don't really like to pull any distance in 5th I thought 33's might give me a little rubber overdrive in 4th gear. Would the bigger tires w/stock gears be better, worse, or no different? Any experience with this setup in a diesel and the 5-speed would be greatly appreciated.

I would think they would be worse if you were wanting to tow a trailer, that is a lot more rolling mass that you have to get moving, even without the trailer, 33s and 4.11s would be better, especially if you live in a hilly area, if you're going to be in the plains, it might not be too bad.

I have 33z and stock gears, but I don't even have a hitch, so the above is just my humble opinion.

I generally do not use my overdrive when towing. The stock gears and 33" are fine. But I have a V8. With your stock 2F I'd regear it and use 5th. You will probably want a little more from dead stop or up a steep grade.

Why have a 5th gear if you don't use it? By increasing to 33" and regear to 4.11 you will have basiclly the same gearing you have now with 31".

Edit: sorry just realized 2H. But still think you would want to regear it to maintain current gearing.

Thing is, I've read that 5th isn't quite as tough as the other gears. Also, I understand that 5th is kinda like overdrive and using it to tow might not be the nicest for your engine.

as long as you don't try to haul anything up hill in 5th, just down shift when need be.

Loading up 5th in the h55f isn't a good idea, mainly for the gearbox (no so much the engine) the reason is fifth is just tacked onto the back of the box, and isn't properly supported bearing wise. when you load it up it twists about and will damage it. (this is why alot of boxes have problems with falling out of 5th while decelerating)

also the original post says 2H motor, which is diesel. I don't know about canadia, but in aus 4.11's came standard in them (if not all). It should tow fine, even with 33's. just keep the motor above 2000rpm It will slow down a fair bit on a decent hill though, just get back a gear before you hit the hill.

In my experience, the 60 will pull 2.2k pounds without any dramas once you start getting up to the 4k mark is when it slows down. How much does a horse weight anywaY?

I drove for a long time my HJ-60 with diferent gears .. my 2H in good shape, H55F and 33" tires .. first I start with stock 3.70 bad too bad .. 5th are useless ..

Second step .. 4.11 best overal gearing .. good fuel economy, good performance on and off road .. good balance.

3rd step 4.56 Awesome . ! :D with this setup I can't go over 120 km/h maybe at much 140km/h but who likes those speeds in ia liffted TLC ..

Sometimes I tow the Samuray of a friend .. for towing I thought your best bet 4.56

Average horse weighs about 800-900 pounds give or take...maybe a little less, but with the weight of the trailer included I'm looking at a minimum of 2000 pounds w/2 horses I've been told. Thanks for the info guys, I'm thinking i'd like to try 33's and see if I can go a little faster in forth without having to rev it at 3000.
