My FJ will be pulling a trailer most of the time (work week) are there any tips for towing a 3500Lb trailer?

On the dash there is a "Differential Lock" button should that be engaged?

I see in the specs that the 4x4 can pull more weight than the 4x2....That doesn't mean i have should have the 4x4 engaged should I ?

do you have a MT or AT?

If you have an AT then keep it out of Overdrive and you may want to engage the 4 wheel drive just to give you more power at your wheels. if you have a MT then you will have enough power just keep it out of 6th gear. As far as your E-locker goes you can only engage that when you are in Low-lock other wise it will not work.

So if you have an AT just keep it out of overdrive that should be fine for towing keeping it out of overdrive lets your engine work at a higher RPM without shifting up so it wont work as hard, and if you feel that it is still lagging then you can put it in 4hi, but locking the diff wont do anything unless you are in low at which point you wont be able to drive about 18mph. I think the truck is rated at 6500lbs towing anyways so you should be good.

no problems

I would make sure you have trailer brakes for sure.

if you have AT i would not put in 4hi for this will cause more stress on the trans and more heat because it will be working even harder. i would get another trans cooler installed in conjunction with the stock cooler and you will be fine.

If you are going to be doing a fair amount of stop and go with the trailer loaded I consider this a "gotta have". I say this as it sounds like this is going to be a most of the time thing.

Don't forget.... it will take longer to accelerate, and longer to stop with a loaded trailer so plan for it. And, if you pass someone, remember you have a trailer behind you before you cut back into his lane.

And most importantly. If you are new to towing.... SLOW DOWN. Take it easy.

Shoot, failed to mention the AT in the FJ is not your typical AT. I believe that the thing is suppose to be a lifetime set up and as such not made to be serviced by just anyone, I'm almost certain the transmission fluid is available ONLY through Toyota. I would recommend speaking to the service folks at your dealership to get an extra capacity cooler installed. Don't let joe bubba six pack at the local trailer hitch shop tell you otherwise without more research.

I assume you are towing on pavement? If so, I highly recommend keeping it out of 4 hi (stay in 2wd) otherwise there will be binding in your drivetrain. The Automatic drivetrain needs wheel slippage to prevent binding (loose dirt road, trails, mud, pulling boat out of the water) as the Tcase locks both front and rear driveshafts together.

Thanks for all the tips guys! Looks like keeping it in 2X drive is the way to go. It will be mostly "around town" driving; and I suppose it will behove me to keep an eye on the tranny and keep it well serviced.

Is the secondary tranny cooler a must? I just dont want the dealer asking me too many questions, and then it could be an issue if I go to have a warrnaty problem....

Cheers!

Consider a trailer with bakes and a brake controller in the FJC. Even a 3500# trailer will push you around. I pull my 40 on a trailer with the wife's FJC auto and it does just fine. Like they said above, just don't use overdrive.

The xfr in the FJC auto is a PART TIME case so you should not engage 4WD (hi or low) on paved surfaces.

your dealer should be more than happy to install a trans cooler for you to avoid warrinty issues. as far as trans fluid just go to partds counter at the dealer and they will be glad to sell it to you to compensate for the extra coooler. and yes i think towing with fjc a cooler is a must you will get a lot longer life out of the trans.

With the 4 wheels engaged, you probably wont even feel the trailer behind you!! A whole lot more control in my opinion.

And like they said...if you're new to towing, take it nice and EZ.

"Jack Knife" is a phrase you never want to utter regarding your trailer!

I need to correct some inaccuracies before someone breaks something...

The FJ Cruiser is rated for 5000# towing - I've witnessed more, but you will end up over GCWR (gross combined weight rating) and if you get pulled over or in an accident, don't be surprised if your insurance goes bye-bye and the nice officer puts you in cuffs...

Towing: I've got 70,000+ miles on the FJ Cruiser I'm sitting in right now (pulled over on I-40 in N-Texas) - these miles were put on in the past 14 months wheeling every weekend and towing a 3000# trailer during the week...I let the truck work between 4th and OD all the time with the automatic transmission, and have had zero issues. (I suggest NOT using cruise control however....easier to manage and improved mileage since it trans is less to auto-shift into 3rd on long/steep climbs). I travel 'within 5mph' of the posted speed limit, and the limit in W Texas is 80mph....again, zero issues. The trailer DOES have electric brakes and we use Tekonsha Prodigy controllers....BIG fan, highly recommended (I have two at home as well)

I've engaged 4-H only a few times while towing, and only while at lower speeds...these have been in low-traction situations like sand and snow where forward progress in 2-H wasn't easy/possible.

Engaging 4-H with an AT _WILL_ bind the 4wd system and _WILL_ likely cause something to give, most likely breaking the transfer case.

Engaging High-Lock with the MT _WILL_ bind the 4wd system and _WILL_ likely cause something to give, most likely breaking the transfer case.

Top end in 4-L with the AT is over 45mph....yes, I'm a professional offroad driver, and yes, it was a closed course ;) Find my 'skiing at 49* north' pics in the Trail Rides corner for proof....that yellow FJC is the same one I'm sitting in now....

Start Hijack:

You had to stop driving for this post!

Or are you pulled over by the trooper waiting for you cuffs for posting while driving?
