Grewmer,My FJ will be pulling a trailer most of the time (work week) are there any tips for towing a 3500Lb trailer?
On the dash there is a "Differential Lock" button should that be engaged?
I see in the specs that the 4x4 can pull more weight than the 4x2....That doesn't mean i have should have the 4x4 engaged should I ?
Most people forget or don't know the 60/40 rule of trailering. 60% of the total weight should be in front of the centerline of the trailer's axle. Otherwise you can and will get some violent swaying from your trailer at highway speeds or less. this is caused by the rear wheels of your tow rig actually being lifted off the road surface. SO, load the trailer accordingly, and try to keep the center of gravity low. Load heay stuff low and light stuff high. Also, try to get your hitch so the trailer is level front to rear, and if possible, stand back and look at the whole picture. The botom of the trailer and the bottom of the FJ should both be level to the ground. Cris-cross your safety chains, lock your couplern and don't do anything else (like talking on the cell phone) while you are hooking up. Check your wheel bearings and tires on the trailer for excessive heat every few hunderd miles. But definetly in the first 50 or so miles. have fun and go EZ.
Sorry to be so long winded, but I have towed for 40 yrs. and hundreds of thousands of miles. And never had a problem!
