Towing larger trailers with an FZJ80...

Could probably tow twice that -if slow enough and short enough distance-depending on how steep the hill. I've pulled semis with a pickup. I've known people that would double their tow rating with weight distribution hitches, transmission coolers, good brakes and tires, not being in a hurry and a lot of sense on what their vehicles could do. Could tow in low range if you needed to and didn't overdo it. The danger goes up exponentially with the speed.

I tow our tent trailer loaded up with my fzj80, would not want to tow anything heavier though. No idea of the weight it is loaded up but I know on steep downhills the trailer can wobble a bit back and forth, which is unnerving. I am considering adding a braking kit to the trailer for this reason as weight is only going to go up after I build a rack for it.

Around here I see 40' overwidth boats being pulled with pickups in spring to the marinas to be slipped. I have seen backhoes being towed behind 1 ton trucks by contractors. I have towed a huge Cat skid loader behind my 1/2 ton chevy .

just because "people do it" does not make it a proper or safe thing to do.....

Thanks guys for the advise. I will need to give it a try and see how my LC perform. Will update with pictures and how the LC performs. I will have to move the boat few times in a year. About 300 miles each journey. East to west to east due to monsoon season. The boat is a bayliner 3255 avanti which i bought in Tampa, FL recently and shipped to Malaysia. It was the boat that gets me to buy the LC. But once I got my LC, I fell in love with it completely. Now I am building my LC for offroad and expedition.

We've towed our 6000lb boat from Idaho to Maine, Idaho to the Puget Sound, etc. I have Airlift air bladders in the rear springs for a perfectly level tow and good emergency handling, keep the trailer brakes in top notch shape, good high capacity tires, and overmaintain the Cruiser's fluids and running gear. I'd still choose the Expedition, though. V8 trumps everything, but I've noted when they tow the rears are saggy.

Im pretty interested to hear more about you experience towing from Idaho to Main. Im looking to do a Trip from Brooklyn to LA with a 4,000 pound camper. How did you fare through the mountains?
