A Lille update. We decided to put new skirts on the camper to get rid of the wheel wells. Pic of the generator, fuel cell, and the hydraulic over electric brake controller. The access hatch will be open to the ground under neither so you will have easy access to the generator for maintenance.

I am in the process of building an overland trailer. I am at the point of arguing with myself over what type axle. I go back and forth between torsion and leaf spring. I don't think the weight of the trailer will vary much and if sprung correctly with leafs it should be ok. I am open for suggestions from the gallery here on what your suggestions would be.
 
I say leaf...if you damage it, a local trailer place probably has one. They will not have torsion axles in stock.

Similar to @ckelly14 , I'm attempting to build out a trailer. It's an old 4x6 enclosed aluminum fruehauf cargo trailer. The plan is to use it as a basecamp in hopes that I can get the wife to join in some adventures (think,"I'm not sleeping in a tent" mentality) so I'm building something that will be more like a teardrop with some extra headroom. Will eventually house a dinette to bed setup + storage for small water tank, rotopax for fuel, on-board air compressor, roof rack with RTT, between 31-33's on it, maybe flip the leafs over, extend the tongue, put different hitch, etc.

Anyway, on to my questions:
Is there a particular reason I need to replace the existing axle for 3500# axle (currently has 1850# i believe)? Asking now because likely I will be replacing hubs soon (6 bolt literally from 1980) so I don't want to replace hubs for this axel, only to replace the axle in the coming months. Once I land on that, will roll down to @wct49 's place for advice on shoes for the trailer. Can't thank those guys enough for what they've already done on my lx470. Love having the experts right here in town.

Try Alpha Specialties for the axle.

Agree, bigger bearings and spindles more important than the capacity.
 
@JHigh if you go back to page 109 in this thread there is a pretty good run down.

Short Version, I walked a trailer tire almost completely off on 49 while picking up a pile (literally). Saturday afternoon, 400+ miles from home and they opened the shop up after hours so I could get a new hub, mounted a new tire on a new wheel and pretty much got me everything I needed to get back on the road. And on top of that, Charlie, the guy who met us, stopped to check on us on his way home and when he discovered we had an oddball hub, he went back to the shop and brought me back the right parts to put it back together and get us on our way.

And if you haven't been around these guys much, I will have to tip a hat to @fountainhead for wasting his saturday to help me out, to @Bodean and @jrob for personally stopping by to gawk and @77TLCFJ40 for checking in on us. They also gave me names and numbers of folks along my return route to make sure I was covered all the way back home. This group is by far one of the best in the Cruiser Community hands down, I only wish I was closer.
 
Here are a few pics from today right at dusk. We are basically thru. Lights wired, and they work. Brakes are bled. I should have a chance to get to the scales tomorrow. Put in your guesses now!
