I was reading on a overland website and they were saying the u shaped metal bars welded to the frame are for tying down for transportation, NOT for pulling you out of a hole! So do I weld on some heavy duty d rings or what??

Pulling from the frame is always your best bet... which the factory tow hook would be the spots to pull from in the front ... I just wouldn't do a running start yank from that point unless absolutely have to ... and don't be surprised if you tweak the frame rail where it is attached if you have to ... @SouthernSS could tell you about that

Strongest pull from the rear of course would be from the hitch position if possible

Got to use my shackle mounts today at my camp. Had some trees down from recent storms. Having these mounts made it quick & easy to pull them out of the way.

You can use a bridle too utilizing both hooks which will lower the stress on each hook. That's really the best option in any situation, if you can do it. Less stress is always better. Ronny Dahl talks about it in this video:

^^^^ This. When I buried my GX in sand on the Outer Banks, using a bridle to the front 2 lash points made it an easy, stress-free recovery.
