Makes you respect those crazy Camel Trophy videos. Those LRs were basically boats in some of those challenges. Who knows what it took to keep them running but doubt anything you could drive off a dealers lot today would survive that kind of water intrusion. I am sure though that being in that much water all night didnt help as opposed to the LRs which were in it for less time I imagine.
The Camel Trophy vehicles had diesels AND snorkels on vehicles with simpler electronics than we have these days, along with a decent amount of modification from stock vehicles and lots of factory support along the way. It was still impressive what they were able to accomplish, but you definitely couldn't have taken a stock LR Discovery from the showroom and expect to do what they did. I purchased a used 1995 Discovery (with the V8 engine) in 1997 and drove it through a deep puddle (close to the top of the hood) a few years later when the only street out of our development flooded in a bad rain storm. I made it out, but stalled coming back in. I was able to get it started again, and get it moved to higher ground, but it took a lot of effort to get it running again after it dried out and I ended up having to replace the fuel injectors some time later (there's a good chance there was a cause and effect there). My take away was to do what I can to avoid deep water in the future.

Glad to hear that everyone got out of this OK, but sorry to hear the LC was totaled. Hopefully the insurance company will come through.

Those are Clearview mirrors out of Australia. I have a set, but they’ve spent most of their life off my truck. Nice, but unless towing, not needed.
Wow!! What a crazy story! Glad you guys are safe. As I have gotten older I’m way more safety conscious and this is a situation I don’t know I would have been thinking could happen! Crazy

How bout my original post....

Why shouldn't I buy an LX? I'm gonna put this stuff back on, Bumpers, roof rack, hopefully another AUX tank, 34's....

Can the LX570 handle it? I've looked at the AHC removal threads and If I have to do that, I'll just be patient and buy another LC. But will the AHC be adequate. My plan is to drive this thing forever.
The only real negatives to the LX are the hideous front bumper on the current models and potentially the AHC if it breaks or isn't rated to handle the weight you want/need to carry. I don't know enough about the AHC to give you a useful answer there. Cosmetics are a personal thing, so that's definitely your call.

I removed some of the stuff, wheels, drawers, awning, ARB compressor.

Can't really remove the bumpers. I sent them the receipts for all the work and parts and they are having problems even doing an estimate currently. The first repair shop told them that it was totaled and they couldn.t do the estimate due to the mods. They towed it to the salvage auction place and they sent photos and insurance decided the pics were inadequate and they were sending an estimator out.... then it will go to the total loss dept to start my fight....
Jeez good luck with that..

If you're keeping the bumpers and everything to toss on an LX, the AHC should handle it. @radman is the first to come to mind that got a loaded up LX with armor and all.
However, the rear bumper passenger side bracket might need some modifying

I thought I could design something cool for the new LX...

I been through that area - my wife and I passed through Gila National Forest, crossing from NM into AZ a few years ago in our 80. Beautiful area. Sorry your trip was such a disaster. Thanks for the reminder of why one should never camp in a dry river bed.

Hopefully you can get that rhino horn off before insurance gets a hold of it!

I'd get an LX570 so that I can swap between 35 and 33" whenever I felt like. I think AHC is decently robust in the 200. Sliders will be expensive. I might be the only LC guy who likes the look of a stock 2016+ LX570. I saw one in person two nights ago in midnight black? (blacker than my 200) and it looked great to me. I like the LC more because of KDSS and not feeling bad killing the look of the LX. Mentally I dont think I could get as dirty in an LX and be proud of it.

One vote for getting an LX. I have a 2013 and I really, really like it. AHC was the selling point for me. Unless you are going to do some hard core off roading (which many do) and need a serious lift no need for traditional suspension. And I 2nd your point on LXs being a easier to find and priced lower. That was my experience when I was shopping for a used 200.

I know some folks will post issues they had/have with AHC but for everyone of those I would think there are 50 who don't post about problems they are not having. I bought an extended warranty from CarMax when I got mine mainly for AHC, the Transfer Case (just in case) and the infotainment screen going Tang Uniform. I am about to hit 80K miles and have not had any issues.

Good luck with whatever you decide and glad no one was injured in your accident/incident.

my condolences on the loss of your desert rhino. An ever more endangered species...

I own a LX and love the AHC. My experience with working on the system is that it’s very robust if you don’t make dumb mistakes. i routinely get 18+ mpg on the interstate in a 9 year old model, so I think there is some value in how the ahc adjusts for fuel economy at speed. I have zero regrets with my buying choice. I ended up picking up the LX for the same reasons you mentioned. It’s easier to find, and IMO a better value given the additional features you get at a lower than the LC price.

AHC is robust and will take the load. You can always install stiffer springs if you really take it to its limits. I have drawers fulll of gear, a 40 gallon aux tank, load up my rack, and do air the truck occasionally.

I’ve got my LX pretty well dolled up; didn’t opt for a front bumper so far otherwise have most stuff you mentioned. Spring spacers to offset the additional weight and you’re golden. I’m pretty sure @radman and @Chrisleduc1 build threads will fill you in on front rear bumper builds.

Why not buy it back and put a new harness and ecu in it?

I would say no because of the salvage title that would result. That said, I owned an E30 3 series that I bought with a salvage title, but it was only due to high mileage.

It's got big problems in lots of weird places... for example both seat heaters are on high even though the switches are turned off. The Fog lights are on even though the lights are off.

It gave me a different perspective on all the cool flood damaged 18's I see on Copart....

I would consult with @mcgaskins. He has had like 150 vehicles and knows a lot about a lot of different makes/models. He has probably had an LX and can give you the skinny.

Not quite 150 yet, but yes 1 LX! 😆 First off @Desert Yeti sorry to hear about your incident. You did the right thing by protecting life over property which was very smart. It sounds like your buddy could have ended up in a much worse position and probably should have abandoned his rig to ensure his own safety. It's a great learning experience not only for you, but for all of us so thank you for sharing.

Regarding the replacement vehicle, I have long thought the LX is the better value over the LC, but there is a big caveat there. I've had an 08 LX, 08 LC, 13 LC, 14 LC, and 16 LC, and by far the best value of the group was the 08 LX. In my opinion, the LX stock suspension is on par if not better than the BP51s and far better than most aftermarket suspensions. I really don't think there has ever been a more robust, capable, and balanced suspension put in a 4x4 from the factory. If it was available on the LC in the US, I would absolutely 100% buy an LC with AHC.

Of course that is not a reality, so even though the LX gets better materials and more features for less money even with a higher initial price, it also has worse off roading angles/clearance, has a generally less desirable Lexus badge, is harder to modify (special sliders for example), looks less aggressive, and has lower residual than the LC. My opinion is the LX is ideal if you just want to throw on 34s (I did 275/65/20 KO2s) and sliders and either don't mind banging up the plastic or don't go on trails where that's a concern, but if you want to heavily modify, the LC is easier and generally has a stronger resale value. People are probably getting tired of this graphic, but it shows how relatively rare the Land Cruiser is even to the LX and the G Wagon which is one of the reasons its resale is so good. I love the 200 platform and don't think you can go wrong as long as you're happy with what you find. Don't let the insurance company lowball you either on your payout btw. Make sure you highlight all the recent expensive maintenance and find your own comps for recent sales of Land Cruisers - particularly auction sites like Cars and Bids and Bring a Trailer since they are verifiable sales not asking prices. The market has gone up dramatically year over year, so they may need help finding current and relevant information.

This reminds me of a you lad who was foolish enough to put his FJ in a mud hole over a decade back. It was only in for a about 25 minutes (which felt like a lifetime) and did fill to the seat level. Shockingly, the only thing that went bad was the alternator (it had 20k miles when it happened). I drove it for 80k after that with no issues which led me to never buy anything but a Toyota. Your story is much worse, but is anyone else shocked that it still drove to the gas station?

hope you settle well. Btw, our 09 LX has 160k, no issues on the Ahc (had fluid replaced 10k ago for pre mnt and no issues).
